Fadlullah appreciates the experiment of the Justice
and Development Party in Turkey and calls on the West to open up on
this Islamic Model
The Religious Authority,
Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah issued a communiqué in which he
commented on the results of the presidential elections in Turkey. He
said.
The success of the modern Islamic experiment in
Turkey although disputable, is something that raises hope on the one
hand and stirs a discussion on the other, especially in what concerns
the relationship between the Islamic strategy and the interim stage.
What makes this success extraordinary is that it happened in a country
where many look up to Ataturk as a prophet of secularism whose text
cannot be changed as if it were the Quran or the Bible, to the extent
that the veil which represents the personal commitment of the Muslim
woman is considered a threat to the regime.
Although we believe that such sternness in dealing
with Islam reveals that the secular regime is weak and not strong, but
we praise the way the Islamists dealt with the negative attitude of
their political opponents. They were patient and tolerant, running the
political and economic confrontation with a high efficiency that made
them even more popular, and that will ultimately lead to a certain
balance in the relationship between the Islamists and secularists or
secularism in general.
In this represent, it might be useful to highlight
a number of points:
Firstly: what happened in Turkey should have a
positive impact on the overview of Islam as a religion that does not
reject others or wants others to reject it, especially that it calls
for justice to all human beings, in contrast with portraying Islam as
a closed religion that cancels others and that resorts to violence as
the only means of change.
Secondly: Experiments have repeatedly shown the
need not to restrict Islam in matters of personal worshipping. On the
contrary, it should also deal in an effective manner with the issues
of organizing the society's politics, economy, security. … etc
.Islamists should not hesitate from asserting the civilized content of
Islam and its ability not only to take part in public life, but also
to assume political leadership in a wise, efficient, balanced and
civilized way.
Thirdly: The rise of the Islamists in Turkey has
proven that Islam is deep rooted in the conscience of the Turkish
people, and that the policy of oppression that was practiced by the
secularists for decades did not distort their belief or deviate their
movement towards their major goals.
Fourthly: Although we know that this experiment has
its particularity that runs deep in Turkish politics, it does not
prevent the Muslims in other countries from trying to reach an
understanding with parties of different ideologies, to ensure the
welfare and political economic and security stability of their
countries.
Fifthly: We call on all Islamic parties, scholars
and organizations to study the Turkish experience; to provide them
with advice about where they were wrong and to learn form them the
elements of success. This will enrich the Islamic experience worldwide
and strengthen the ties between the various Islamic experiments.
Sixty: We call on the Western states and circles
that welcomed what had happened in Turkey not to stop here, but they
should move to tell their nations about this Islamic experience that
presented tolerant Islamists who are open on those who differ with
them. They are even more tolerant than the secularists who have moved
to stop any development in their secular regime and denied the people
their right of freedom and other human rights.
We want all the Western circles and even our Arab
and Muslim regimes to look at this Islamic model that cannot be
accused of terrorism, just because it adopts Islam or because it
opposes the policies of a certain political axis… It is such an
attitude that allows for an Islamic – Western dialogue that is free of
misconceptions, stereotypes and false accusations.
