The Arabs should not expect much from Annapolis

The Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah, has emphasized that the US Administration is not serious in starting the negotiations between the enemy's government and the Palestinian Authority as it suggested in the Annapolis Conference, since it yielded to the Israeli will. And that is why it withdrew its draft resolution that calls for implementing the Road Map, from the Security Council.

His Eminence stressed that this stage is the stage of diluting the Palestinian cause whether by America and Israel or by some of the Arabs. He asked the Arabs not to expect much, for America will not give them anything they can market in their countries.

He also called on the Palestinians to be aware of the fact that Israel is trying to use the Annapolis resolutions to ignite a Palestinian civil war.

In a statement in the context of commenting on American's withdrawing of draft resolution it had submitted to the Security Council upon Israel’s refusal, The Sayyed said:

The picture is becoming gradually clearer, and it is showing that this conservatoire American Administration can not decide on any political move that has to do with the region or Palestine in particular, except after conferring with Israel, and yielding in the end to its demands, which proves that the Israeli will is above that of the Americans.

The withdrawing of the US of the draft – resolution that it submitted to the Security Council detailing the obligations of the Road Map, upon Israeli request, is another proof that the Israeli interest is, in the eyes of the Americans, above all interest.

The Administration felt that compelling the Israeli government of doing anything restricts Israel’s movement, especially that the Jewish entity does not want to hold serious negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, regardless of how formal they are.

It also shows without doubt that the Americans do not want to jumpstart the negotiations between those two parties as it suggested in Annapolis… This Administration wants to leave to the Israelis the freedom of foregoing all their promises and commitments, especially that the Winograd report is due soon, and it is bound to affect the Israeli government negatively despite all the American and Arab attempts to polish Olmert's image.

Thus we say to the Arabs who suggested to their peoples that the Annapolis Conference represents the life savoir to the Palestinian question that they have to appreciate how dangerous it is to yield to the American Administration which will not lend or give them anything they can return to their peoples with. They have thus not to raise their expectations since this is not the time to run serious negotiations between the enemy and the Palestinian authority. They want to dilute this issue with the participation of some Arab parties, in addition to Israel and the USA.

We say to the Palestinians: you have to study the situation thoroughly, since Israel is planning to benefit from the chance Annapolis created to corner and starve them as well as either pushing them to a civil war, or waging a war against them, especially in Gaza.
