Imam As-Sadiq (a.s.)
And the Call to Hasten to Do Good Deeds

Allah says in His Glorious Book: " Hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and to a garden the extensiveness of which is as the extensiveness of the heaven and the earth; it is prepared for those who believe in Allah and His messengers; that is the grace of Allah: He gives it to whom He pleases, and Allah is the Lord of mighty grace" (57:21)

This Ayah, in addition to many other Ayahs, contains a permanent call to the pious person to hasten to do good deeds, whenever, there is a chance to do them and not to postpone them because doing good deeds is a chance that one ought not to lose… Therefore, man should be always ready to do good deeds and this is what Imam As-Sadiq (a.s.) has confirmed.

He says: "Whenever one of you desires doing good deeds, do not postpone them – if you intend to do good deeds, such as paying Sadaka (almsgiving), fulfilling the need of a pious person or making him happy, performing a prayer or a supplication, hasten to do that and do not postpone it - the servant may pray or fast the day, and he is told: Do whatever you want after that, hence, Allah has forgiven you". Perhaps, this hour could be one of the hours in which Allah bestows on His people His grace... And if man opens himself on Allah and obeys Him in this hour, it might be the hour in which Allah forgives him and this forgiveness might continue to last longer due to the nature of these Divine blessings…

As-Sadiq (a.s) also says: "Start your day with a good deed – start your day with a good deed that Allah loves in your sayings and actions – And dictate your angels a good deed at the beginning of the day- because everyone of us has two angels who write down his actions. So, say to the angels: Write good, good deed, or good movement – and a good deed at the end of the day. He, the Most Exalted, forgives you. And if you start your day with a good deed and end it also with a good deed, Allah will forgive you for all the sins you committed in that day, between the first good deed and the second one.

And it is recorded that Imam As-Sadiq (a.s) said that his father said, "When you intend to do a good deed make haste to perform it – when you think about doing a good deed, hasten to perform it in reality – as you do not know what would happen thereafter, lest something may hinder it. Perhaps, the present situation is suitable for doing a good deed, but it might be complicated later and thus prevent you from performing good deed.

Imam Al-Baqir (a.s) also says: "My father used to say: Whenever you desire doing a good deed, hasten as you do not know what will come up." Whenever you intend to do a good deed, hasten to perform it as you do not know what would happen thereafter, that is incidents may hinder it.

Imam As-Sadiq (a.s) says: "The Prophet (p.) said: Truly Allah likes a good deed which is done hastily". When you intend to do a good deed, do not to think about it, but perform it directly, since Allah wants man to live the good deeds in his life in a way he feels that his life is dedicated for doing good.

The Imam mentioned fasting a hot day as an example of the good deed that may exhaust man and make him tired, seeking Allah's rewards and this act may free him from the fire of Hell. Thus, when man performs a good deed that makes him exhausted and tired, Allah will have mercy upon him and save him from the fire of Hell. He guided us to perform any action that Allah loves, even if it is a small one. That is because when Allah wants to reward you, He does not take into consideration the size of the action that you did, but he evaluates your action according to what it means to you in what ensures your love and nearness to Allah...

In another Hadith, Imam As-Sadiq (a.s.) also says: "Whenever you desire doing a good deed don't postpone it because Allah will see it and say: I swear by My honor and majesty that after this I will never torture you."And if you wish to make a sin don't because sometimes God will look at his slave while making a sin and say: "I swear by My honor and majesty that after this you will never be forgiven."

In another Hadith that reflects the same idea, As-Sadiq says: "Do not make little of any good deed, for it may lead you to Heaven, and do not make little of a sin, for it may lead you to Hell". He (a.s.) also said: "Whenever one of you intends a good deed or doing good to somebody, he should hurry up so that he will not be prevented by the devils on his right and left sides …." Just like man has two angels who protect him and inspire him to perform good deeds, he is also surrounded by two devils who prevent him from performing good deeds … there are many satanic people who, if they saw a man doing a good deed, they try to prevent him from performing it…"
