The Methodology of Imam Ali Bin El-Hussein (a.s.) in Social and Spiritual Building    (Part II)

Wealth Lies in Contentment:

Imam Al-Sajjad (a.s.) confirms that the wealth of the spirit lies in man's contentment with his needs and that greediness is poverty. He (a.s.) says: “I saw that all the good deeds have met in ceasing to covet what people possess”. That is because when you ask people to give you from what they possess, you will humiliate yourself and be submitted to greediness. Therefore, people will exploit you to do what you do not believe in, and consequently, you may deviate, whereas staying away from greediness, will make you rebel against all your evil traits, then all your good deeds will find their way to your heart. To stay away from greediness does not mean that you do not have to work with people, deal with them, or take your rightful profit from them. You have to ask them for the profit which you have made when you worked with them in what Allah permits. So, be satisfied with the results of your efforts and work. Allah says: {And do not stretch your eyes after that with which We have provided different classes of them, (of) the splendor of this world's life, that We may thereby try them; and the sustenance (given) by your Lord is better and more abiding} (20:131)... Imam Ali (a.s.) also said: “Be far above any vice” – any thing which lowers your personality, your humanity, and your dignity – "even if it drives you to engage in pleasures, you will not be able to compensate what you have spent from yourself (dignity)" - so, if you get all the money in the world and you humilitate yourself or a part of yourself, you are said to have lost in this deal, since you will not be able to compensate your dignity which you have offered in return for that - and the one who did not beg people for anything – for his desires- and he refers to Allah, the Most Exalted – and he felt that he is the producer of his sustenance – Allah will respond to him in everything".

Patience and Satisfaction

Al-Sajjad (a.s.) said: "Patience and satisfaction are the summit of obeying Allah - So, do you seek to be among those who obey Allah? Try to think carefully about your inner personality; do you have the patience that revolts against deprivation? Do you have the feeling of satisfaction due to your belief, whenever you realize Allah's decision in what you love and hate? Do you feel that all what Allah ordains is wise , and that all what He, the Most Exalted, doe, is for theman's interest? - The one who was patient and satisfied with Allah's decision – Allah, the Most Exalted does not predestine in what he loves or hates except what is good for him". Allah gives him the good in his life time as well as in the afterlife.

Talking about patience, Imam Al-Sajjad (a.s.) says what his grandfather, Imam Ali (a.s.) has said: "The Patience to belief is like the head to the body, and the one who has no patience, has no belief". So, patience is the thing that gives life the vitality of belief. Patience is like the head that drives the body and moves all its organs to perform their functions, thus, the body has no value without the head. Therefore, man must be patient in order to confirm strongly his belief without being affected by any obstacle such as, weakness, deprivation etc….

The Best People Are Those Who Worship Allah Most

In another Hadith, the Imam (a.s.) says: "The one who abides by Allah's orders is one of the preferable (best) people - as if the Imam (a.s.) is telling us how can a person be present before Allah as a special and ideal person - “Observe Allah's orders” - perform the duties of worshiping and the duties of the personal, moral, social, political, military or economic obligations and all the obligations which Allah obliges you to do in your relation to Him, to yourself, and to people… Thus, if you abide by Allah’s obligations, you will be one of the preferable people to Allah because you will be performing the good deeds which Allah has guaranteed to reward you for … Hence, this is the meaning of the favored person who deserves to be called one of the best (preferable) people - “The one who abided by Allah's obligations is one of the best worshipers” thus, to worship Allah means to perform all the duties which He obliges you to do, whether in a worship, in a treatment, or in a relation, since, to worship Allah means to be submitted to Allah's orders in every thing.
