Islamic definition of political and social security

Sayyed Fadlullah: we call on all parties in Lebanon to try to create a healthy atmosphere of dialogue, for those who do not try to cool things down will be held responsible in the end for the negative consequences that the country will suffer from.

Asked in his weekly seminar the following question: Due to the increasing turmoil in Lebanon and the region, how does Islam view security? And how do you see the general political situation in Lebanon and the region?

The Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah, said:

Islam has focused on preserving the general security of the nation on the various political, economic, psychological and other levels.

To ensure this security, it has instituted regulations that ensure social justice, reject monopoly, exploitations and all forms of economic corruption.

Moreover, Islam recognized that the nation does not need external security only, but it also needs internal peace, which could only be reached only through the respect of values of its members. Everyone needs to be in peace with himself before he lives it with others.

To secure both external and internal peace, Islam holds the ruler accountable if he fails to secure the general security of the people. It even made the legitimacy of any government based on sustaining the political economic and other form of security of the nation.

It also stressed that the utmost priority should be attributed to construction as compared to collecting taxes, as Imam Ali told his Wali Malik Al-Ashtar when he appointed him to rule Egypt.

But the general social security of the nation can't be served unless it is accompanied by a similar security, political and media discourse that ought to stay away from anything that incites sectarianism or fanaticism.

Turning back to the region, we notice that the American Administration has created tense situations all around the region and integrated political, psychological and social insecurity as a part of its general plan for the region, and leading the sects and ethnic groups to believe that there are roles waiting for them in accordance to the general American project for the region. It led the entire region into an unprecedented state of turmoil in its extension and severity.

This Administration has come to represent a problem for the entire world, since it has made it less safe despite it claims to the contrary. It turned Iraq into a continuous massacre moving from one place into another. And if it tried to calm down the situation in Palestine, it was not because it was thinking about the rights of the Palestinians but about trying to concentrate on getting out of the impasse it has put itself in, in Iraq.

We warn that this Administration that has failed on the strategic level in Iraq has started to think of making Lebanon its favorite station in the region by using the political mistakes that were committed to accelerate this pace.

In this respect, we warn that the European powers that refused to see Americanís suffer from a total defeat in Iraq against what they call fundamentalism, have paved the way for America to exploit the Lebanese situations to the extent that we have begun to see political tradeoffs in Lebanon at the expense of political forces and entities.

We warn the Lebanese against this insistence on letting the international and rejoined players interfere in Lebanon, for it will make the country prey of the international interests that seek to create sectarian tensions and create further political and security turmoil that will in its turn increase the state of fragmentation. That is why we call on all parties in Lebanon, those who are with the government and those in the opposition to try to create a healthy atmosphere of reconciliation and to resort to a calm dialogue that does not mean that they have to stop adhering to their principles, for those who do not try to cool things down will be held responsible in the end for the negative consequences that the country will suffer from.
