Islam and scientific knowledge

Sayyed Fadlullah: We are quite concerned with the internal conflicts that are being created in Palestine, and the attempts to interfere in the Lebanese Syrian relations where they want to pressurize the initiative of internal dialogue and undermine the efforts of reconciliation between brothers. We have to maintain and enhance our unity and be very careful in what we say or do, because we are in a time in which every party waiting for the otherís fall to dance on his wounds, even it theses wounds are that of the entire nation.

Asked in his weekly seminar the following question: What is Islam's view regarding scientific knowledge and human progress?

The Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah, said Islam is the religion that Allah sent the Messenger of mercy, Muhammad(p.) with. Believing in Islam is to believe in the Quran and all what it brought including knowledge whose holder according to the Quran, is promoted several ranks.

Islam is based on two fundamental components, the doctrine and the law. Both are instrumental in deducing the concepts and methodology in politics, education economy, sociology etcÖ Moreover Islam has in addition to its philosophical view of man life and the universe, the civilizational aspect that embraces all life and rules in all its details, leaving no issue, no matter how much life becomes more complicated and the issues different than those Islamic jurisprudence used to deal with.

The general rules of Islamic jurisprudence enable the scholar to deduce from Allah's Book and the Prophet's traditions new rulings for new events. This is what we noticed, for example, in the ruling regarding the issue of cloning that aroused a heated juristic debate. It proved along, with other rulings, that Islam does accompany the progress of science. It also proved that the religion, which was sent to all mankind in every time and place, plays an important role in the field of science and research.

Nevertheless, we ought to know that science does not always represent the truth, especially in the field of theories, which might be based on insufficient data, which will make such theories subjected to change once new or different data is revealed. The only scientific truth that identifies with religious truth is that which is similar to mathematical truth.

Based on this, and on the fact that Islam is a call to creative and productive movement that makes use of the scientific laws man discovers to serve life and the prosperity of man, we can say that Islam is a religion that attracts thought, research science and creativity. It is a religion that is associated to the essence of things and issues, and one that opens up on awareness, knowledge, culture and freedom. It is a religion that enables man to live the experiment of paradise on earth, a paradise that is based on justice, love, and forgiveness.

That is why we have to be the nation of science and planning and not the nation of ignorance and improvisation, since the power of science would inevitably lead to the science of power.

This, as well as our belief in God in the first place, will enable us to overcome all pressures that we are subjected to, especially in this stage, in which we witness, an international campaign that makes every effort to prevent us from achieving self-sufficiency in the fields of science and technology that would enable us to develop our economy. The Middle East and especially the Arab and Muslim region should remain, according to their plans, a market for American and Western products on the one hand, and a region that yields to the Israeli plans and ambitions on the other hand. And this is why they trying to prevent Iran from benefiting from its right in enriching Uranium and in conducting scientific and industrial research, even if it has the right to do so by the international law.

Moreover, the attempts of the Security Council to further complicate the internal Arab and Muslim relations, as in the case of the Syrian-Lebanese relations, under the pretense of correcting it, represent the other side of the attack on the region. They want the polite or silent international organization when it comes to Israel, to run the internal Arab and Muslim relations in accordance with the American interests, leading to a new phase of hegemony in which the UN is the police that oversees these changes. At the same time, Israel continues to build the separating wall and draws its borders on Palestinian territory, without any word form the UN.

We are afraid that a decision has been made to create political anarchy and tension between our states and inside each state, as an alternative or a prelude for security anarchy. That is why, we are quite concerned with the internal conflicts that are being created in Palestine, and the attempts to interfere in the Lebanese Syrian relations where they want to pressurize the initiative of internal dialogue and undermine the efforts of reconciliation between brothers.
