Immigration to the West

Sayyed Fadlullah: We are witnessing a European hypocrisy in of these spheres that coincides with the American hypocrisy against our peoples. In addition they are trying to undermine the legal Islamic presence in Europe. Thus, we call on all Arabs and Muslims to wake up and stop being overwhelmed by the sectarian discourse. We should dedicate all our efforts to our major causes, for we are targeted not only in our technological and industrial development, but also in our very political and human existence.

Asked in his weekly seminar the following question: What is the Islamic view towards immigration and integration with other socialites?

The Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah, said

The phenomenon of immigration is a human one that is associated with many factors, such as the economic that is represented in seeking to sustain a living, and the political and security element that forces many people to leave their homelands and seek refuge in other countries that provide security and protection for them. Imam Ali says: There is no country better than another; the best is the one that supports you.

In principle, Islam neither encourages immigration per se nor rejects it. It believes that it should conform with the general interests of man. Immigration might be unlawful when it is to run away from the fronts of fighting for the cause of Allah and protecting one's homeland against aggression. On the other hand, it might be a duty when one cannot perform Allah's duties, as well as his other political and cultural duties, in his country. This is what led the Muslims to emigrate from Holy Mecca, and go to Medina where they were able to spread the call in every direction, which enabled them in the end to return to Mecca, which had always been alive in their conscience. They always felt that they yeaned to Mecca being their hometown. In this respect, the Prophet is known to have said, that he would have never had left Mecca had not the Meccans forced him.

This is why we call on all immigrants not to forget their homelands, since this feeling in a natural innate feeling in man.

Imam Ali says: "… Of the components of generosity of man is his crying over his past, his yearning to his country and his faithfulness to his old friends".

We would like to emphasize the importance of such a feeling; especially at a time many spheres in the West are stealing Arab and Muslim brains and providing them with multiple incentives to ensure that they will not return.

This, in addition to the oppression and backwardness of the regimes in our countries as well as not upholding their responsibilities towards this huge wealth, has developed several countries that reached the technological and scientific level of the super powers, while we have witnessed a setback although we are in a dire need to embrace these brains and find an appropriate political and scientific environment for their creative production.

The Muslim immigrants, especially to the Western countries, should not cut their historical, and cultural roots. They should not be alienated, especially that there are many attempts to dissolve the Muslims’ personality and force them to abandon their values and Islamic commitments.

But this does not in a way mean that we are against the integration of Muslims in Western societies. On the country, we have always called on Muslims in these societies to open up on their compatriots in the Western states and behave as good citizens who are faithful to their countries and who are involved in developmental and political issues, but without relinquishing their beliefs and duties.

Nevertheless, we are unfortunately witnessing these days the beginnings of a conspiracy against the Muslims in the West that aims at deporting them under the vague pretence of being unable to integrate, which makes us feel suspicious of what the actual goals of such practices are, especially that we have begun to hear that they constitute a threat to the European societies, and even as the Israelis said a few months ago, that they represent a demographic threat that might change the demographic composition of the EU states.

We feel sorry that the Western political circles and institutions have begun to base their moves on fanatical and nonobjective basis and we would like to ask: if their fears are real why do not they have any remarks regarding the integration of Jews in these society, as the Jews seek to integrate the societies in their own culture and goals and not the other way round.

We do not deny that there is a small group of those who belong to Islam that practices violence and acts in a way that violates the teachings of Islam, and that this group represents an actual barrier in front of integration. Nevertheless, this group is equally dangerous towards the Muslims, for they legalize the killing of both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Thus, all efforts should be united to besiege this group and not to put the blame on the Muslims and make them pay for the faults of this very small group that is being hugely inflated.

Moreover, we wonder if the West is really honest in his claim of seeking integration, then why does not it give the Muslims their religious freedom, and allow them to practice their rights freely? The West has consistently restricted these rights as in the veil issue, and we feel that such an attitude will hinder the Muslims’ integration, since they would feel that they are threatened in their belief and commitments, especially that the new conditions for integration are still a controversial issue among the European themselves.

The Summit of the six which European interior ministers convened asserted that illegal immigration is "one from of organized crime". If this is so, how do they view the Jewish immigration to occupied Palestine that is still flowing, aided by the support of several European states, and whose consequences were the expulsion of a people from their land to facilitate the immigration of illegal immigrants? Then, if what is established on the basis of falsehood is not false, why do they deal with Israel as the only unquestionable truth and forget UN resolutions, especially 194 that guarantees the Palestinian right of return. They have even gone as far as cutting all aid to the Palestinians.

We are witnessing a European hypocrisy in all these spheres that coincides with the American hypocrisy against our peoples. In addition, they are trying to undermine the legal Islamic presence in Europe. Thus, we call on all Arabs and Muslims to wake up and stop being overwhelmed by the sectarian discourse. We should dedicate all our efforts to our major causes, for we are targeted not only in our technological and industrial development, but also in our very political and human existence.
