Islam the religion of peace and not terror

Sayyed Fadlullah: we call on our elites to engage in a productive dialogue with those in the West that are open on Islam and knowledge. We also call on the nation to invigorate the internal rational dialogue among its sects, so that we could solve our problems and draw plans for success in our future having been plagued by sectarianism and partisanship.

Asked in his weekly seminar the following question: What is the Islamic position regarding the hostility towards others? Does Islam harbor aggression towards all those who differ with it?

The Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah, said :

Enmity represents a state of self-suffocation, as a result of the personal complexes, and the feeling of arrogance towards others, and a readiness to deny and besiege them, as well as a constant effort to get rid of them , such enmity is cased by many factors.

Firstly, the envy that represents the negative feelings and wishes towards the other.

Secondly: Mistrust and suspicions towards the other since it creates an atmosphere of lack of trust between individuals and groups, Allah has prohibited this vice in His saying: Avoid suspicion as much (as possible): for suspicion in some cases is a sin

Thirdly: lack of understanding of the other, and relying on impressions only, without trying to read him as he really is. Prophet Muhammad(p.) has highlighted this point in his saying:

If you talk frankly to each other you would not have fought (each other to death).

Another cause of hatred and enmity is the domination of personal interests and desires to the extent of becoming blind and deaf and not to be with the right no matter how clear it may be. God says :They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire.- He also told us about the Children of Israel who used to kill the prophets that were sent to them or accuse them of lying : whenever then a messenger came to you with that which your souls did not desire, you were insolent so you called some liars and some you slew.

As for the consequences of enmity, its negative results affect both the individual and the society. On the individual level, it complicates the life of man, leads him to live in isolation and fills his heart with hatred, which in turns affects his life and the lives of those around him. As for the social level, enmity is one of the elements of the nation's fragmentation, leading to its weakness, and affecting its reputation and making it a victim of all who which to plunder it.

The Quran tells us how Allah's Grace was bestowed on the Muslims, changing their attitude from one of hatred towards each other of one of love and good wishing: and remember the favor of Allah on you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts so by His favor you became brethren;

Islam wanted the people to eliminate all traces of enmity from the souls of hearts of all human beings so as to make man full of good, mercy and love to all fellow humans.

The Prophet(p.) , His purified progeny and his honorable companions used to love even their enemies, and felt sorry for those who fought them, for they did not want anybody to go to heaven because of them, and because they did not hate the unbeliever as a person but they hated his unbelief and rebellion on God.

Islam has rejected the logic of permanent enmity. It has left the door open for the enemy to return to the right path, and thus establishing good relations with him.

Thus, what is been internationally claimed that Islam is the religion of terror, and that it instituted enmity among people and that the sword spread it, is unjust whether regarding Islam or to the actions and teachings of the Prophet(p.) as well as the behavior or the majority of Muslims.

It also denies the historical fact the Muslims were” the most merciful conquerors" and that they did not force the members of the other religions to adopt Islam. This fact is acknowledged by several contemporary Western historians who asserted in their writings that the minorities under Islam were living in better conditions than those of other rulers that claim to be followers of other religions.

We understand quite well that what several Western administrations and some of their media are trying to do is to promote Islam as the sole enemy of Western civilization. International Zionism further spreads this claim to create a bigger rift between Muslims and the Western nations, to pursue the interests of the Zionist entity and to broaden the political rift, and transform it into a cultural and structural one.

This blind malice against Islam and the Muslims is not in most of the times, a product of their ignorance of Islam and its values; it is the result of a grand conspiracy plotted by the arrogant powers to facilitate their dominance over the Muslim countries and create a barrier between their people and Islam whom the successive polls have shown it to be the fastest spreading religion.

As we call on the Western circles to stop targeting our causes and antagonizing our peoples, we call on our elites to engage in a productive dialogue with those in the West that are open on Islam and knowledge. We also call on the nation to invigorate the internal rational dialogue among its sects, so that we could solve our problems and draw plans for success in our future having been plagued by sectarianism and partisanship and having entered into a dialogue among the deaf that made us enter into dark tunnels, instead of opening up on the broadness of the horizon of our major cause.
