The Religious Authority H.E. Sayyed
M. H. Fadlullah delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain
Al-Hassanain Mosque,16th June 2006, Several
prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers
attended the Jumu’a prayer.
Responsibility to enjoin the right and forbid the wrong
The First Sermon
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
God says in His Glorious Book:
Let there arise out of you a band of people
inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right and forbidding
what is wrong: They are the ones to attain felicity.
He also says to the Muslims:
are the best of peoples evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right
forbidding what is wrong and believing in Allah".
He also says:
And (as for) the
believing men and the believing women, they are guardians of each
other; they enjoin good and forbid evil and keep up prayer and pay the
poor-rate, and obey Allah and His Messenger; (as for) these, Allah
will show mercy to them; surely Allah is Mighty, Wise.
In these Ayahs, as well as others, Allah, the Most
Exalted, emphasizes the principle of enjoining the right and
forbidding the wrong which He made the most essential value that could
rise the nation to the level of the best nations, since it is the
nation that holds the responsibility of being sublime in the spiritual
moral and social aspects.
The issue of enjoining good and forbidding wrong is
an issue which is demanded of each person conditions and potentials.
It is also an issue that has to do with the major
causes as well as the minor. That is why Allah wanted the people to
enjoin good and forbid evil that is why the Quran tells us about
Lukman’s teaching his son:
O my son! establish regular prayer, enjoin what is just, and forbid
what is wrong: and bear with patient constancy whatever betide thee;
for this is firmness (of purpose) in (the conduct of) affairs .He
also advises each one of us:
O ye who believe! save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose
fuel is Men and Stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and)
severe, who flinch not (from executing) the Commands they receive from
Allah, but do (precisely) what they are commanded.
Imam Al-Baqir says: enjoining the good and
forbidding the evil are two of God's traits. Who abides by them, Allah
will support him while who fails them Allah will fail him. The
Messenger (p.) says: Who enjoins good and forbids evil is Allah's
caliph on earth, and also the caliph of His Messenger's. Imam Ali
(a.s.) says: The Sharia is established by enjoining good and
forbidding evil and observing Allah's limits.
He also considered that all good deeds and
struggling for the cause of Allah do not reach the level of enjoining
good and forbidding evil, because it establishes the line of justice
and elevates people to be closer to God.
As to the manifestations of enjoining the good, it
includes returning the trusts and being just when in position of
ruling, since justice is the basic Divine rule of life.
Imam Ali (a.s.) says: " Enjoining good is the
best of human deeds" He also says: "Who enjoins good
strengthens the Muslims backbone".
The Messenger(p.) said that Allah hates the weak
believer who has no religion, asked who that is, the Messenger(p.)
replied it is he who does not forbid evil. He also says: "A
believing soul should not see Allah disobeyed without denouncing it”,
Imam As-Sadiq says: If the believer sees evil being committed and does
not forbid it although he is able to, He likes Allah to be disobeyed".
The Path of Good
Allah tells us about why those who disbelieved were
Curses were pronounced on those among the Children of Israel who
rejected Faith, by the tongue of David and of Jesus the son of Mary:
persisted in excesses. They used not to forbid each other the hateful
things (which) they did; certainly evil was that which they did.
Imam Ali (a.s.) says that they were perished
because they committed sins, without being forbidden by their priests
and rabbis. Imam Hassan "Allah cursed those who disbelieved among
the children of Israel because they saw the oppressors practicing evil
and corruption and did not forbid them, either because of what they
were receiving of them or because they feared their retaliation.
Imam As-Sadiq relates that when the verse that
instructs the Muslims to avoid hellfire was revealed, one of the
believers began to cry and say: How could I protect my family. The
Messenger (p.) told him: It is enough to call them for what you
call yourself and forbid them from what you forbid yourself.
Thus, you should not ignore any evil committed by
your family, or act indifferently.
He also says: Woo to the people who do not
support the religion of Allah by enjoining good and forbidding evil.
Imam Baqir says: Enjoining good and forbidding evil
is the path of prophets and the pious; a great duty that leads to
performing all other duties, secures the religion, and deems gains
lawful and builds the earth, and punishes the enemies, and
straightness up all affairs.
This great duty is relevant to all our affairs. It
is not, as people think, limited to a certain aspect. Good has to do
with everything. It has to do with praying fasting, performing
pilgrimage, and paying Alms taxes and giving charity. It also has to
do with performing one's duty towards one's family by feeding and
Forbidding evil, on the other hand, means to keep
away from what Allah has prohibited like consuming alcohol, gambling,
adultery and taking the money of others unlawfully. It we see people
forsaking their duties and committing the prohibited, we have to
enjoin the good and forbid the evil.
Imam Ali (a.s.) says: Enjoining good and forbidding
evil do not near a person's death or lesson his sustenance He also
told his sons; Imam Hassan and Hussein: Do not leave the issue of
enjoining good and forbidding evil, lest you will be ruled by the evil
among you, and you will call on Allah, and will not be responded to.
We have to bear the reasonability of what Allah has
held us responsible for: All of you are shepherds and each is
responsible for his folk. Therefore, Allah wants us to eliminate
the negative aspects in our societies and institute the positive ones,
for this is what makes the society a dignified honourable pious and
strong one. Man is not responsible for himself only, but also for his
people and his society. This is what Allah wants and this is what we
should compete on.
The Second Sermon
Death of Humanitarian Feelings
Israel is trying to disavow from the massacre of
the Gaza beach by all possible excuses; including that is was mistake.
Nevertheless, as its press is talking about the brutality of the
massacre and the responsibilities of its army, the American president
describes it as an act of self-defence, because he believes that
Israel alone possesses this right. He is not moved by the scene of the
innocent child that was crying in front of her family, for he no
longer has any human feelings of sympathy and compassion, except if
the children were Jews. Any other children like those in Palestine and
Iraq are merely insects that could be slain in cold blood.
The problem with this President is that he does not
recognize the Palestinians’ right to defend themselves, even against
the Zionist atrocities.
Nevertheless, he continues to talk about human
rights, which America and Israel, violate daily whether by torture of
detainees or shelling civilian houses starving economic blockade …etc
This is what the downtrodden world should
understand about the West that talks about human civilization, while
Israel continues to bomb and the arrogant world, along with some Arab
regimes, keep silent and indifferent.
The Resistance should continue
Perhaps the biggest problem in Palestine is the
internal Palestinian struggle that could lead to internal strife and a
row about the continuity of the Resistance. Some officials are
pressurizing for the unconditional recognition of Israel although it
did not promise to recognize the legitimate rights of the
Palestinians. It only accepts the negotiations that emphasize Israeli
rejection of the Palestinian vital issues, such as the right of
return, the withdrawal from Jerusalem, demolishing the wall and
dismantling the settlements…which means that what it wants is
We believe that the stage now is one of the
continuity of the resistance and not the establishing the state, since
its establishment is tied to several political and security
restrictions, and since it reveals that the West is lying when it
talks about the freedom of nations, while it accepts the occupation of
one people to another. That is why we believe that all the people of
Palestine should continue to embrace the Resistance since it confuses
all international and Israeli – and even Arab defeatist plans, and
since they will not gain any of their rights through the Quartet
Committee or the Arab Resolutions.
The Iraqi Tragedy
Iraq's security is still in a very bad shape, to
the extent that the American President had to take all precautions so
as not to be assassinated in Iraq. Nevertheless, he still talks about
the American victory, without thinking about the need to save the
Iraqi people from the occupation that was catastrophic in all aspects.
Moreover, in addition to plundering the Iraqi wealth, the American
intelligence allied with the Mosad has succeeded in inciting sectarian
We call upon the wounded Iraqi people who moves, as
a result of the occupation from one problem to another and who also
have to face the Takifiris who threaten the Shiites and the Sunnis who
want to solve the problem by taking part in the political process with
killing and bombing….
We call on them to rise above the sectarian
differences to be able to focus on the real problem of occupation and
the need to gain their freedom and independence, before it is too
Lebanon, which is still vulnerable to Israel
intelligence on the security level, as it is to the political tutelage
of foreign powers, desperately needs a review of many of its plans and
conditions to prevent the Israeli penetration that represents the real
danger on the country.
The discovering of the Israeli terrorist network
reposes the question regarding the stand the states that claim to care
about the Lebanese sovereignty especially the EU should take. We did
not hear from them any condemnation of these Israeli subversions.
Moreover, The US that demands that Syria should
withdraw its intelligence from Lebanon did not utter a word asking
Israel to stop interfering in Lebanon.
The Army and the Resistance
Ruling out the Israeli role in destabilizing
Lebanon is an act of unprecedented political naivety, if not
complicity. The discovering of terrorist network although it proves
that there is a watchful eye represented by the Resistance and the
Army, indicates that there is a need to enhance the elements of
internal protection especially the Resistance.
The assassinations committed by this network call
for asking the UN to investigate all the crimes Israel has committed
in Lebanon, and explore the possibility of being responsible for
several other assassinations in Lebanon.
The officials, especially those involved in the
dialogue, should not depend on the US to stop the Israeli role in
Lebanon. They should be objective in that they should depend on the
protection of the Resistance and its arms, as part of the Lebanese
