The Missionary Aspect in Social Relations |
When we read the Prophets’ history we find that the arrogant people
who overwhelmed the society attempted to separate themselves from the
poor and oppressed people. Therefore, they demanded that the Prophets
(p.) should drive away the oppressed people.
The values of belief
In their response, some prophets (p.) used to say to their people: “I
will not dismiss those who believed. I see that you are becoming
ignorant”. Hence, the main idea lies in the missionary value which man
holds regardless of material and lineage considerations. This is because
man's value lies in his inner spiritual properties and all other matters
which people claim to be superior to have, are external and not part of
the human existence.
Also, lineage is not an internal value, but it is a matter of
belonging to a family or a tribe. Thus, your father is not you. If he is
a great person, this does not make you great, and if he is a vile person,
this does not make you vile, because you belong to him physically, while
you are not him and he is not you.
Consequently, when Imam Ali (a.s.) talked about being near to the
Prophet (p.), he said: “the nearest person to Mohammad (p.) is the one
who obeyed Allah even if he is not of his (p.) relatives, and the enemy
of Mohammad (P.) is the one who disobeyed Allah, even if he is a closed
relative to him (p.)”. Allah also, says: {Most
surely the nearest of people to Ibrahim are those who followed him}
(3: 68), and not his children. Thus, you are not evaluated according to
your lineage or your money; you are evaluated according to what you
believe in.
Imam Ali (a.s.) says: “the value of man lies in what he is skilled
at”. Tell me, what your vocation , your experience, your mental and
intellectual potentials are… Tell me that and I will tell you what is
your value. Hence, you are not evaluated according to the amount of your
money despite what people might believe in. For this reason, Islam
focused on the moral and spiritual values, on the intellectual abilities
and on the activities Allah says: {Verily the most
honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of
you} (49:13).
Therefore, Allah (The most Exalted) wanted the Prophet (p.) to respect
the believers who live the belief in their minds and hearts and apply it
in their life, for they are characterized by their spiritual, moral and
human values although they are poor. Allah says
{And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord in the morning and
the evening, they desire only His favor}. Here Allah is telling
the Prophet (p.) not to drive away those who call on their Lord morning
and evening seeking Allah's Face, and opening their minds on Him (The
Exalted): {Thou art not accountable for them in
aught}. You are not accountable for them, for they are responsible
for their acts, and you are independent in your duty as a messenger, as a
prophet (p.) and as a herald. They are also independent in their acts and
Allah will hold them accountable, {nor are they
accountable for thee in aught, that thou should repel them
And be of the wrong-doers}. So, why do you
drive them away? They have their own independency, value and rank and you
do not have any thing to do with them although you are the Prophet whom
they followed and were guided by. This verse means that if you drive them
away and respond to the arrogant people in Mecca who detest them, you
will be of the unjust.
Turning to the Arrogant People
Allah says: {And withhold yourself} be
with them, live with them.{And
withhold yourself with those who call on their Lord morning and evening
desiring His goodwill, and let not your eyes pass from them}. So,
do not let your eyes overlook them and thus drive them away.
{and let not your eyes pass from them, desiring the
beauties of this world's life}. Do not turn to the rich and
arrogant people because they have the pomp and glitter of life.
He (The most Exalted) also says: {and obey not
him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance}. Do not
obey those who never praise Allah; neither by words nor in their stands
{and he follows his low desires and his case is one
in which due bounds are exceeded} (18:28). Those people were
doomed and deemed vile in Allah’s sight.
This line – as we said before, dear ones – is the line which
emphasizes the Islamic concepts to all believers and calls them not to
despise the poor and oppressed people while turning to the rich and
arrogant people because of their money, prestige, or desires …etc .
Thus, Islam also emphasizes that humanitarianism with all its moral,
spiritual and active values is the way which people must follow to
respect others according to one's respect of himself and not to his own
financial and other potentials.
This is the Islamic value, which Muslims must adopt and teach to their
children in order to live our humanity with others.
