The Religious Authority H.E. Sayyed M. H. Fadlullah
delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain
Mosque, 14th December 2007 AD, 4 Zul Hijja 1428 H, several
prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers
attended the Jumu’a prayer.

The First Sermon
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the
Merciful
Since we are in the Hajj season and the Eid Al-Adha is imminent, we
have to talk a little bit about the issue of determining the date of
the Eid:
Many Fatwas were issued in the Muslim world that differed in
determining this day, with some saying its on Wednesday and others
saying Thursday and even Friday. We would like to comment on this
issue by the following.
What some Muftis have announced about the beginning of Zul-Hijj
being on Monday, and therefore the Eid is on Wednesday is very
strange, since the crescent will not be born before 7:40 pm Sunday
evening. Thus, it could not be seen anywhere. And who are saying that
they have seen him are wrong.
We believe that Monday is the last day of Zil-Qida, Tuesday is the
first day of Zul Hijja, and the Eid is next Thursday.
Sayyed Sistani and others believe that the beginning of Zul-Hijja
was last Wednesday and thus the Eid is on Friday.
As for those who emulate us, we adopt the ruling Sayyed Al-Hakim
and Imam Al-Khomeini asserted about the issue which is even if the day
of the Eid is not correct, the Hajj, Allah willing is valid.
In the light of this, we will pray the prayer of the Eid on
Thursday.
Who is the Shiite?
Who is the Muslim? Who is the believer? And who is the Shiite? Let
us learn who they are by reviewing the cultured heritage of our Imams.
Imam Jaafar As-Sadiq (a.s.) describes in one of his sayings the
Shia's of Ali (a.s.) as being the people of “guidance" those who
follow the guidance of Allah, and those who never adopt anything that
could lead them to become astray. They are the people of "piety" who
fear Allah and obey of His commands
And those
who, having done something to be ashamed of, or wronged their own
souls, earnestly bring Allah to mind, and ask for forgiveness for
their sins,- and who can forgive sins except Allah?- and are never
obstinate in persisting knowingly in (the wrong) they have done
They are the people of "good" who in any society they live in will do
good in fields of life and to all the members of the community old or
young. They are the people of ”belief,” who believe in Allah,
and Believers
are those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts,
and when they hear His signs rehearsed, find their faith strengthened,
and put (all) their trust in their Lord;
The people of “conquest” who would in any battle against unbelief
and arrogance, strive to achieve victory from the Muslims, thus they
are people of "victory".
In another saying ,the Imam says to one of his companion: stay away
from the contemptible for the Shiite of Ali are only those who abstain
from the (Haram) food and sexual desires, work sincerely for the
Creator, hope for gaining His reward and fear from His punishment.
Imam Al-Baqir describes the Muslim as the one whom the believers
are safe from his tongue and hand. He does not abuse other Muslims
verbally or commits any injustice against them… The believer is the
one who people entrust him with their money and themselves. He is
forbidden to wrong other Muslim or to let him down or push him into
difficulties.
Jaa'far As-Sadiq (a.s.) also says that the believer is the one whom
the good from him is hoped: If he lives in a community, this community
will feel confident to except good from him to every one he lives
with, whether his family who would expect that he would sustain them
and care for them, or the bigger community he is expected to care for
and provide every service he is capable of. "Evil from him is safe".
He is a man who does not treat anybody with evil, for he respects them
being his brothers and fellow citizens, whom he loves for what he
loves for himself and hates what he hates for himself. In addition,
His belief would prevent him from doing evil.
"He regards little good from others much". If others do good to him he
will appreciate it because and consider it plenty.
"He regards his own good as little". When he is good to others he does
not feel it is more than what he ought to, this is because he believes
that the potentials Allah has given him are but a trust that he should
give back to its owners. He is not fed up with those who request
favors or needs, since he knows that needing him is one of the graces
Allah has bestowed on him. He is not tired of seeking knowledge
throughout his life. Allah differentiates between those who know and
those who know not. Poverty in Allah is more lovable for the believer
than richness with the enemy. For Allah has said”
If he has to choose between being poor while keeping his faithfulness
towards God and between becoming rich through his relations with the
enemies of God he would choose poverty, because Allah is the one who
enriches him if he becomes poor, and He is the one who bestows on him
His Mercy and makes his abode in Heaven… Humbleness in God is more
lovable for him than high rank with His enemy…
When he sees someone he says he is better than me and more pious.
People are two men – one man is better than me and more pious, the
other is more evil and lower than me. If he sees the one that is more
evil and lower than him he would say: perhaps the good of this person
is hidden, which is good for him, while my good is apparent which is
bad for me which means that I might not be better than him. Then when
he sees the one who is better and more pious than him, he would be
humble to him to reach his state. If he does that, his glory becomes
high, and he will become the lord of the people of his time. Imam Al-Baqir
says that the believer is stronger than a mountain for you can ruin a
mountain while the believer remains firm. As-Sadiq (a.s.) also says
that the believer is the one whose anger will not lead him to become
unjust, nor would he commit any falsehood if he is pleased. Moreover,
when he is capable, he will not take more than what is rightfully his.
Dear beloved, these are some or the qualities of the Muslim
believer who adopts, the line of Ahl-Beit, whom we should follow their
guidance to ensure our well being in this life and the Hereafter.
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
The Second Sermon
The American Administration is enhancing its political and military
cooperation with Israel, to ease the tensions it encountered following
the embarrassment that was caused by the latest American national
intelligence report concerning the Iranian nuclear dossier, since the
report has confirmed its peaceful gaols and the absence of any Iranian
plan to make a nuclear bomb in the foreseeable future.
Perhaps the visit of the American chief of staff to the enemy’s
entity was to assure the Israeli leaders that the US will not forego
its commitment to ensure Israel’s military superiorly over all the
sates of the region.
The American Israeli coordination and cooperation has reached the
level of overlapping in which one completes the other. They have
coordinated the plan to occupy Iraq that led to the instability of the
entire region, and become an open front for chaos, killings and
carnages; in addition to the continuous support it gave Israel when it
committed its aggression against Lebanon last year.
We believe that the region's problem is not Iran. It is Israel that
possesses the biggest nuclear arsenal that threatens the region, and
the most advanced weapons that it uses in its aggressions.
The problem is also the United States which deploys its fleets,
threatening to wage a war against Iran and encouraging the Arab
countries to complicate its political, economic and military relations
with it, at a time we see that the Islamic Republic have proposed to
the Arabs in the entire region a project of economic and security
cooperation that protects the Arabs especially the Gulf states.
The problem lies in this dual combined aggression of the US and the
Jewish entity, that made America practice a game or political deceit
in Palestine; talking about a Palestinian state has become one of
consumption that does not contain any plan for execution although many
years have passed, since it was issued. On the other hand, The US talk
about Israel as a homeland for the Jewish people constitutes a cover
that could facilitate the rooting out of what it is left of the
Palestinians, the denial of the right of return to the Palestinians
who were forced out of their country and the encouragement of the Jews
all over the world to come to Palestine.
In addition to all this, the international cover is giving Israel
more freedom to continue its killing, and shelling to the civilians in
Gaza and the detaining of the Palestinian youth in the West Bank, as
well as the economic besiege on Gaza and building new settlements in
the old neighbourhoods of Jerusalem, without any Arab or European
reaction or any American pressure. In this respect, the US Secretary
of State talks only that this does not help in building the confidence
the Annapolis Conference tried to build.
We believe that the silence of the Arab and Muslim worlds towards
all this daily Palestinian blood spilling and not making any
initiative to stop the deterioration of the inter – Palestinian
relations that led to political and economic destruction, represents a
big crime against the entire Palestinian people, as well as the
Palestinian cause.
The Lebanese Crisis
The cold season has begun in Lebanon, with many people unable to
warm themselves as a result of the price rise of commodities,
especially fuel. Then we have the rationing of electricity, which
reached the extent that having electricity has become almost the same
as blackout, thus affecting people's daily living and well-being.
We do not know how can a government, constitutional or not, respect
itself when it besieges its people with such an ignorance of their
basic life meets.
On another level, the internal whirlpool of the continuous
constitutional debate and the lack of confidence among the Lebanese
parties, while the people are confused as they stare in this conflict
that has been void of realism and values. The political class with
some exceptions have failed in terms of strategic vision, but it
succeeded in repeating rigid opinions and tactical manoeuvres without
regard for the people's situation, or the country's future.
Internal complications have returned to their peak, while the
renewal of bombings has restored to the Lebanese the feelings of fear
and concern about the deterioration of the security situation. This
situation may open the horizon to assassinations in a bid to
destabilize Lebanon's political and security situations.
Have mercy on this small country that is suffering on the internal
level and witnessing regional and international interference that
prevents it from being stable. The Lebanese should look out and watch
all suspicious movements because it seems that the fate of this people
is to assume the responsibility of self-protection on its own. |
