The
First Sermon
In
the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
From the Members of
House whom Allah, the most Exalted, has purified is Imam Zain Al-Abidin
whose death anniversary is on the 25th of Muharram.
When we think of the
role of this Imam, we will notice how multi-dimensional his imamate
was, for he lived to fill the minds of the people with knowledge,
their hearts with love and their life with good.
Imam As-Sajad, as he is
known, reached the apex in his spirituality. He loved God and
worshipped Him so much that he was dissolved in Him. When we read
his supplication, we will learn how to talk to God, and how our
belief in God will make us open on good and tranquility. The
supplications of the Imam(a.s.) make us feel that he was living
Islam in all its ethical and spiritual aspects. We would feel as if
we have enrolled in a cultural and spiritual Islamic school that
will make one's life full of God.
The Imam(a.s.) has
taught us this very important lesson: How to live with God
throughout all our life, and especially in its cultural and
spiritual aspect.
Ashoura: The Message.
When we review the life
of this Imam, we will find out the he lived all the acts of the
Ashoura tragedy. In addition to the theme of Ashoura, the need to
enjoin good and denounce falsehood even if it costs you your life;
the theme of pride, steadfastness and readiness to die for the cause
of Allah, he lived all its chapters that were unprecedented in their
dimensions. He had to watch a toddler slaughtered, young men killed
and the elderly martyred… He also had to live with the women's grief
and patience. He had to keep up all this in his mind without falling
down.
That is why he was very
courageous when he met the tyrants in Kufa and Damascus. He
challenged them in an outright manner. Thus, when we study the Imam,
we do not accept the picture that many of those who recite the
events of Ashoura present. He was not a humiliated man who crying,
for he was very courageous when he met Ibn Ziad and Yazied. But
those reciters want us to cry and not to learn the message Ashoura
is supposed to teach us.
Moreover, the tragedy
of Ashoura did not hinder him from teaching Muslims when he returned
to Medina the basis of their religion, onr did it prevent him from
filling Islamic life with Knowledge, spirit and movement.
In addition, he acted
as a role model in his morals of forgiveness and tolerance. It is
said that when the city revolted against Yazid, they wanted to kill
Marwan Ibn Al-Hakam who hated Ahl El-Beit and had previously advised
that Al-Hussein ought to be killed. Thus, Marwan wanted to flee,
leaving behind a large family of about 400 sons and grandsons and
their families. Nobody in Medina accepted to offer refuge to them
except the Imam (a.s.) whom the Umayyads killed his father, his
brothers, his uncles and their companions.
Such were the morals of
Imam Ali bin al-Hussein (a.s. ) that when he was cursed by one of
his relatives, he asked his companions to "Let us go to him so that
we will say what we have and he will say what he has. The companions
thought that this meant that he was going to confront him in a
violent manner, but when the Imam saw the man, he told him “You have
described me with bad things. If they were true, I ask God to
forgive me, but if they were not, I ask Him to forgive you”. The man
was stunned and said: "I was wrong, God alone knows who should be
entrusted with His message.
Filling life with knowledge and spirituality
The Imam filled his
community and the Muslim nation in general with knowledge,
spirituality and morals.
When one of his
companions saw him crying out of fear of God, and could not
understand how could the grandson of Muhammad (p.), and Ali (a.s.)
the commander of the faithful, and the son of Imam Hussein (a.s. )
and the nephew of Imam Al-Hassan, he said: "Leave out the talk about
my father and grandfather, Allah has made Heaven to those who obey
Him regardless of their race, and He created Hell to those who
don't, even if they were Quraishite dignitaries.
He was filled with
piety and humanitarianism. If he cried over the martyrdom of his
father, it was because he wanted to keep Ashoura alive in the memory
of the Muslims, in a way that merges between emotion and the message
to keep the struggle for the cause of Allah alive and vibrant at all
times. This is why the Imam was the first to hold Ashoura ceremonies
that has provided the driving force to several Islamic movements,
struggles and revolutions.
But the call for
tolerance, patience and forgiveness, being the basis for the Islamic
ethics served the ultimate goal of Islam in this field: "To enjoin
good and forbid evil”. The Imam used to say: "Leaving the call for
enjoining the good and forbidding evil is similar to leaving the
Book of Allah”.
This is the lesson of
Imam Ali Bin Al-Hussein (a.s. ) ; a lesson who ought to grasp to be
able to lead a spiritual and ethical life. Peace be on him , his
father, his grandfather, his uncle, his grandmother and his great
grandfather, the Messenger of Allah.
The Second Sermon
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the
Merciful
Resolution 1559 and the American Interests.
The American -European
alliance is talking about international legitimacy and about the
need for Syria and Lebanon to respect it, as far as resolution 1559
goes. They are even talking in a tone that implies threatening and
not only exerting pressure. Their envoys, and embassy officials are
executing a concerted plan in connecting with a certain Lebanese
party to create a certain feeling of concern over the stability of
the country.
But things became very
dangerous, following the barbaric assassination of prime minister,
Rafic Hariri, and attempts to destabilize the country were stepped
up considerably.
We have asserted
several times that Lebanon, just as any other country, has the right
to enjoy its political and security freedom, and to be sovereign and
independent in matters concerning the right of self-determination.
We also asserted that Lebanon has a right to base its relations,
whether with those neighboring it or other faraway countries, on the
basis of sovereignty and mutual respect.
But why is the call for
implementing this resolution so aggressive while Israel has rejected
all the Security Council resolutions that has to do with it. Israel
has stood against resolution 19 4 that calls foe the return of the
refugees, and its position was supported by President Bush in his
letter of guarantees to Sharon. Israel also rejected Resolution 242
and 338 as well as all the other decisions that have to do with the
settlements and the racial wall…
The International
Community that Bush pretends to talk on its behalf did not exert any
pressure on Israel as if it can get away with what others can not.
The same thing goes to the latest resolution that aims at banning
WMDs. This resolution has exempted Israel while it has made a lot of
fuss about Iran's peaceful nuclear program. Then there is the
American occupation of Iraq that was based on the big lie of Iraq
possessing weapons of mass destruction.
Is the issue one of
freedom democracy and peace or rather the American interests that
seek to exploit whatever shortages or gaps in the policies of any
country to execute their own agenda.
America and Israel
In this atmosphere it
is quite Ironic and cynical that the US hints that it would provide
security aid to help fill in the vacuum that would be created by the
Syrian withdrawal. We have seen how America has filled in the vacuum
in Iraq turning it to a place where Iraqi civilians fall everyday.
It has not been able even to protect its own tropes.
The American envoy who
has come to Lebanon to execute the already setup plan for this
country through the instructions he had given to those who have
chosen to adopt the American line, has agreed with the enemy's
foreign minister in saying that if Lebanon is liberated from the
Syrian occupation, it will sign a peace treaty with Israel.
They also intersect
with those who are raising questions regarding the arms of the
resistance, despite all their talk of the necessity of protecting
it.
We, as a nation, have
to look to what is happening in the region around us. We have to
observe what is happening in Palestine, which was told in London
that it has to reform first as a precondition to establish a state
although we know that the Palestinian people need to be liberated so
that it could utilize all its abilities and potentials to run its
own affairs. In doing this they do not need any regional or
international conferences.
The massacres in Iraq
Iraq that suffers from
the disaster of occupation moves from one brutal massacre to
another. These massacres are committed by mainly two parties: Those
who accuse others of being not Muslims and practice their hatred on
Muslims in the name of Islam's, while the other party is the
occupation which we believe is responsible for all the massacres
because they have failed to protect the people , let alone
protecting their troops . In this respect, we call on the Shiite and
Sunni religious scholars to raise their voice against this tragic
situation.
We also pray to Allah
to relief the Iraqi people from this catastrophic situation.
Lebanon and Responsible action
As Lebanon faces the
threat of power vacuum and political turmoil, as well as security
instability and the intensification of the economic crisis, we call
on all parties to resort to planning instead of improvisation , and
to be rational and not emotional.
We call on them to
resort to objective dialogue in which each party recognizes the
other, on the basis of citizenship instead of confessionalsism … We
have to understand that there are many problems that has to do with
freedom, economy, politics and security. These issues need further
studying and exchange of views. They need leniency, instead of
violence and confrontation in the intellectual arenas and not on the
popular fronts.
Are we asked to destroy
the country by our emotional or sectarian reactions that could lead
to the fall of the temple on the heads of all of us? Do we need to
reenter the American -Israeli age, which will not be in the
interests of the Lebanese, nor in the interests of the entire
nation.
The coming stage needs
responsible thinking possible leadership and responsible people.
Could we face this challenge? |
