Imam As-Sajad: A Role Model In Courage and Worshipping

The First Sermon

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

Allah says in His Glorious Book: Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying.

On the 25th of this month, Muharram, is the anniversary of the death of Imam Ali bin Al-Hussein Zein Al-Abideen (a.s.), this Imamhas lived the entire tragedy since he stayed with his father (a.s.) for 23 years. He (a.s.) then lived to hold the responsibility of Imamate after his father (a.s.) was martyred.

But if all people are used to talk about the Imam (a.s.) in the atmosphere of tragedy or about his dedication to worship, we believe that he (a.s.) was the teacher of the Islamic stage he lived in. Sheik Al-Mufied says: "Jurists have narrated his teachings and sayings in a vast number of sciences, not least of which are the sermons and supplications about the virtues of the Quran and what is lawful and what is haram as well as the wars of Islam …, etc. A Sunni scholar, Ibn hujr says in his book, As-Suwaik Al Muhrikah: Zein Al-Abideen is the one who succeeded his father in his knowledge and asceticism. He used to grow pale whenever he performed Wudhu in preparation for prayer. Asked about the reason, he said: "Don't you know whom I am standing before. How can I not be fearful? "

He (a.s.) was so forgiving that when he (a.s.) was cursed by someone, he ignored him. But the man said: "I am talking to you!" The Imam (a.s.) answered: "And I am turning aside from you since Allah says: Hold to forgiveness; command what is right; But turn away from the ignorant."

When we read about the life of the Imam (a.s.), we meet with Abdullah bin Al-Hussein bin Al-Hassan who says: "My mother Fatima bint Al-Hussein used to order me to sit with my uncle Ali bin Al Hussein (a.s.). Thus, whenever I sat with him, I learnt a good thing from him, either to fear of Allah, seeing how he fears Allah, or by learning something from him."

Several roles

When we review the life of the Imam (a.s.) we find that it is divided into several parts. The first one is the youth stage in which he lived with his father(a.s.), who used to talk to him the talk of an Imam to his successor. Thus, he gave him his knowledge as well as his spirituality and courage. Did he (a.s.) not say when Ibn Ziad threatened to kill him (a.s.): "Do not you know that getting killed is our habit and that martyrdom is an honour to us."

Thus, he (a.s.) was courageous to the extent that he humiliated Yazid despite all the atmosphere of tragedy and imprisonment. Thus, the Imam (a.s.) learnt the Imamate from his father and took his morals and spirituality from his mother, Fatima (a.s.) and his grandfather the messenger (p.).This was the stage of learning which enriched his experience. For example, he told his son Al-Baqir (a.s.) that he was told by his father (a.s.): "Do not ever wrong anybody who does not have any supporter other than Allah." The Imams have always sought justice and accepted no wronging especially to the weakened and the downtrodden whom Allah is the only supporter.

The second stage:

Then he lived with his father the tragedy of Karbala but he was very sick that he could not fight, although he wanted to, but he was prevented by this father who wanted the earth not to be void of an Imam (a.s.), whom Allah wished to be represented by the progeny of Imam Ali (a.s.).

Thus, the Imam (a.s.) lived the tragedy of Karbala, where he witnessed what was happening to his father (a.s.), his brothers (a.s.), his uncles (a.s.) and their companions. This tragedy continued to be alive in his heart as long as he lived, remembering it always and reminding the Muslims of it.

Thus, we can say that the Imam (a.s.) was the first to institute the Ashoura commemoration, since he used to cry time and again and tell his companions about the events of those tragic days.

The Imam (a.s.) also lived the episodes following the martyrdom of his father (a.s.), when the entire family of Imam Al-Hussein(a.s.), including the women, were taken as prisoners to Al-Sham. This was a barbaric behaviour, since although this was common in war, it never included Muslim women, let alone the progeny of the Messenger (p.).

The problem of those Umayyads was that they adopted only the appearances of Islam. That is why we can understand how Yazid asked the people of Medina to pledge loyalty to him as slaves, with the exception of Imam Ali bin Al-Hussein (a.s.) only.

Then after this stage comes the stage of worship. The Imam was the symbol of spiritually in his prayers and supplications. He even used to pray for the armies the Umayyads sent to the conquests, for he did not, like his grandfather, Imam Ali (a.s.), before him, think about his own interests but those of Islam, even if it means praying for those who were unjust to them. Their major and only concern was to defend and protect Islam. It is said that the Imam used to say to his companions: "Love us the love of Islam", meaning do not love us for ourselves but on the basis of the Islamic line that describes what a Muslim leader is like.

The Imam's Morals

The Imam was known by his forgiveness even to those who had hurt him. One of the rulers of Medina was particularly hateful of Imam Ali Bin al-Hussein (a.s.) and used to treat him (a.s.) and his family in a very harmful manner. This same ruler was ousted and punished by being sent to the streets to be beaten and insulted by those whom he wronged. The ruler was especially fearful of those he had hurt the most. The Imam (a.s.) gathered his family members and told them not only not to hurt the man, but to see to his needs and to pass by him respectfully and smiling. Seeing this, the man said: "God only knows where to leave his message." The Imam (a.s.) was in Medina when there was a conspiracy against the Ummayds. Marwan bin Al-Hakam, one of their senior notables happened to be in Medina too. He wanted to flee but his family of children and grandchildren were about 400 people… Meaning that no fleeing could be arranged in a swift manner. He went around in Medina trying to provide shelter for them, but no one agreed except Imam Ali Bin Al-Hussein (a.s.) who provided them with shelter and said to Marwan: "let your family join mine." He treated him in this way although he knew that Marwan is the one who advised Yazid to kill his father so that no one will pledge allegiance to him. One of the Imam's relatives used to speak harshly and even curse the Imam (a.s.), but all the Imam did was to go to his house and say: "You have said something about me that if it were true I ask God to forgive me, but if it were not I ask God to forgive you." This shock changed the man into a totally different person.

Remembering this, one of the daughters of Marwan says: "We did not find in our father's house the kindness and love we found from the Imam."

He has also said: "I have never had a sip of rage that is more likable than the one followed by patience. Al-Zahir, one of the companions of the Imam (a.s.) who was not a Shiite, says: "I have never seen anybody better than him (a.s.). And I have never heard of a discreet friend of his or a public enemy. Asked to explain that, he said: "I have never seen anybody who loves him, but who did not envy him for his knowledge. And I have never seen anybody who hates him, but who did not try to avoid him."

There is also a saying for the Imam in which he condemns fanaticism. He says that it is not fanatical to love your people, but to see the evil among them better than the good among others. He also says that it is not fanatical to love your people but to help them in wronging others, meaning that you are not allowed to jump to support the oppressor, be he a relative, a member of your sect or a member of your party, before making sure that he is not the one who wronged.

Modesty

The Imam (a.s.) used to focus on the issue of being modest. He used to travel with people who did not know whom he (a.s.) was. Once he (a.s.) met with people who knew him and found out that he was given the task of collecting wood for fire.

The men who knew him asked the others: "Do you know this man?" They answered: "A man from Medina". When they were told that he was Ali bin Al-Hussein, they went to the Imam and said: "O son of Muhammad (p.) do you want us to go to hell, what if we had offended you". The Imam said: "I have travelled with some people and they gave me, as a tribute to the Messenger of Allah, what I do not deserve" – although he deserves a lot, but he said that out of modesty- and I do not like to be given …what I can not give something equal to it in return."

This is the greatness of Ahl el-Beit, they do not wish to take something unless they have already given something in return.

When one of his companions saw him crying out of fear of God, and could not understand how could the grandson of Muhammad (p.), and Ali (a.s.) the commander of the faithful, and the son of Imam Hussein (a.s. ) and the nephew of Imam Al-Hassan, be so fearful , he said: "Leave out the talk about my father and grandfather, Allah has made Heaven to those who obey Him regardless of their race, and He created Hell to those who don't, even if they were Quraishite dignitaries.. "

This is the line of Ahl-Beit the line of Islam that says that no Arab is better than any other member of another race except by piety.

Dear beloved, these are our Imams, our masters and leaders. They are our teachers at all times, I advise my brothers and sisters to read As-Sahifa As-Sajadyiah that will make them nearer to Allah, and give them an Islamic culture and high spirituality. May peace be on Ali bin Al Hussein, the day he was born, the day he died and the day he is brought back to life.

The Second Sermon

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

The Winograd Report

An earthquake has struck the enemy's entity, with the publishing of the Winograd report, which recognized the Israeli defeat in Lebanon and admitted that the war was a result of an Israeli predetermined decision.

Such admission that the enemy has entered a stage of defeat and drawbacks, as a result of a jihadi Lebanese, Arab and Islamic effort that could be described as creative, makes us call on everybody in the Arab and Muslim world to study this milestone, since we believe that armed by good will enable the nation to draw from what had happened, a plan to defeat Israel in its very existence.

We also call on the Lebanese to consider this victory one for all of them regardless of their political difference.

Let this represent an opportunity to let everyone go back to his senses and believe that the resistance option is the best and soundest option. Let it be a basis of national unity in this small country that was able to defeat the strongest force in the Middle East.

And if the Resistance was able to achieve victory by its struggle and sacrifices,

The downtrodden nations had hoped that the UN Security Council would be an institution that upholds political and economic justice, defending the oppressed and the wronged, especially the Third World countries that include the Arab and Muslim worlds. They had hoped this could be done by studying the tough problems that were imposed on them by the arrogant powers, especially those who control economic globalization and seek to increase the wealth of the rich and the poverty of the poor. But the law that governs this Council is based on the permanent membership of the superpowers so that it can maintain their interests and their domination of the poor countries. The law also allows the superpower, to pressurize the other members into voting to their favour at the expense of the interest of the downtrodden nations. This has virtually made the Security Council an American national security council that practices its hegemony over even the European "allies" such as Britain and France.

One of the most obvious repercussions of this American hegemony over the Security Council is evident when it comes to Israel. There is a comprehensive and permanent rejection of any resolution condemning the Hebrew state whether in its occupation of Palestine or its carnages against the Palestinian people… the humiliation at the cross points, assassination, detentions... etc. They do not also condemn the confiscation of Palestinian lands to build settlements or erect the racial wall that turns Palestinian villages and fields into a prison… Then there is the kicking of the Palestinians from their houses and giving them to the Jews as what is going on in Jerusalem.

On another level, the American Administration, especially after the events of nine eleven has put the Palestinian Resistance on the terrorism list and began to fight it and issue Security Council resolutions that condemn it in an effort to justify all the Israeli barbaric acts as self-defence. This is exactly what the Security Council is doing when it studies the Israel besiege of Gaza that aims at striving the Palestinians and induce a total blackout. The Arabs submitted their draft resolution to open the crossings and resume the provisions of basic and vital Palestinian needs. But the American envoy stood finally against any resolution that would force Israel to respond to the humanistic Palestinian needs, because he wants the Council to issue a decision that would demand that the Palestinians should stop launching any missiles on the settlements because this is the main motive for the closure of the crossings, but at the same time he did not ask the Council to pass a resolution calling on Israel to stop shelling the Palestinian civilians by its advanced American planes, or killing the leaders of the Intifada, and the various incursions on the West Bank and Gaza. This is what prevented the Council form issuing balanced resolutions, since America has the right of veto that is always ready to be used against any of the rights of the downtrodden peoples.

Moreover, America can always act on its own if the other members do not agree with it as it did in Iraq.

Arab Ministerial Meeting

It was evident that Washington was a part of the Arab meeting in Cairo. It pushed for a punishment of those who were victorious against Israel’s 2006 war, it made every effort to prevent them from actively participating in the government in accordance with the constitution which calls for consensual democracy and not that of the majority.

It is interesting that the certain religious and political Christian positions who used to refuse any talk about the democracy of the majority, and the election of the president directly from the people, have now began to talk about a majority and a minority.

As for the meeting between the enemy's prime minister and that of the Palestinians, we notice that it did not achieve any positive results, whether in opening the crossings or stopping the assassinations or the issues of the final status. Israel is following a policy of deceit and marking time. They depend on the support of Bush and on that of his successor, whether a democrat or a republican, since Israel’s interests are the basis of the American policies, and the Arab do not have any weight in the US.

Lebanon and the language of violence

In Lebanon bullets were the first response of those who demonstrated to demand their rights, with some even accusing the protest as a kind of unrest that should be confronted.

The entire world legalizes peaceful demonstrations against governmental policies. If things aggravate the government will use water or other safe means. We have seen in France that cars were burnt and not even one demonstrator was killed and no politician accused the demonstrations of engaging in political struggle, or hastened to kill the protestors.

The Responsibilities of the state

Although a lot of people in Lebanon talk about the state that solely protects its citizens, we find that this government was not able to discover any of those who committed the assassinations that started with the late prime minister Rafic Hariri.

Even the international investigation committee, did not reach a conclusive result, with some trying to accuse the intelligence agencies. Lebanon's problem is that it was and is still an arena for international and regional intelligence services, which use some local parties and sectarian figures to achieve their projects, that do not give Lebanon a peace, but leaves it to chaos and instability. It would be like saying that we have arrested the victim while the murderer was able to escape… We ask the officials in this state to be serious in protecting its citizens, and not use it as a slogan in a political auction.

We call on all media outlets regardless of its political affiliations, to seek the truth in its pursuit of all events. We want them not to add fuel on the fire, and to use them for a political or sectarian gain, for this will burn the entire country and not just one of its parties and because any injustice to any party will be an injustice to all parties in the end.

Thus we want media outlets to be the voice of justice and truth and to seek accuracy and objectivity, we want the media to practice self-monitoring and not to be a mouthpiece for those who play with people's security and trade in their sufferings.
