His Eminence, Sayyed Ali Fadlullah, delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, Rajab, 8th 1437 H. – April, 15th 2016. Several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.
In the first sermon, His Eminence, Sayyed Ali Fadlullah, talked about how one should think and reach rational and objective conclusions. He focused on the influence of the society in manipulating the individual’s mind through what he termed as the collective mind. He also drew the attention to the danger of power, whether political or monetary, in influencing the individual decision.
The Sayyed also shed light on fanaticism, explaining how it undermines objective thinking and makes one consider all what the side he supports does or think to be the right, while those of the opponent’s to be wrong and harmful, without considering the interest of the nation or the homeland.
The Sayyed maintained that in order to overcome such a mentality, we should be aware of the methodologies that formulate our ideas and accept that they may not be as correct as we might think. Then, we ought to isolate the environmental elements, whether social, political or otherwise, that influence our thinking, for this is the first step towards objective reasoning.
The Sayyed acknowledged that it is naïve to believe that one could fully isolate all these elements, but we should try our best, and most importantly, we should not be afraid to adopt ideas that are different from the ones adopted by the society. This means that we should not let the society, the sect or the party formulate our ideas out of fear of being isolated or becoming outcasts.
Thus, we should think freely away from fanaticism or personal whims. This is our religious duty, for it enlightens our way to piety, fear of God and serving our fellow Muslims.
In the second sermon, the Sayyed talked about the anniversary of the Lebanese Civil war, analyzing its causes in an attempt to make sure that it does not return, which could easily happen if we follow the wishes of the foreign powers who direct us to serve their own interests and destroy our country as a consequence.
