Thursday, April 27, 2017 is the first of the month of Shaaban 1438 H

Date: 22/04/2017 A.D 25/07/1438 H

The Juristic Office at the Institution of the late Religious Authority, His Eminence, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra) issued a statement in which it announced that Thursday, April 27, 2017 is the first of the month of Shaaban 1438 H., according to the jurisprudential opinion of the late Religious Authority, His Eminence, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra).

Following is the text of the statement:

The new crescent (central conjunction) for the month of Shaaban 1438 H. will be born on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 A.D. at 12:16 p.m. (GMT); that is, at 15:16 p.m. Beirut time. In the evening of this day, the crescent can be sighted by the aid of telescopes in most of the regions of Central America and North America, as shown in figure (1)[1].

Therefore, Thursday, April 27, 2017 is the first of the month of Shaaban 1438 H. for the regions that share even only a part of the night with the regions where the sighting is possible, and Friday, April 28, 2017 is the first of the month of Shaaban 1438 H. for the regions that do not share even a part of the night with the regions where the sighting is possible, according to the jurisprudential opinion of the late Religious Authority, His Eminence, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra), which considers that to establish the beginning of a new lunar month, it is sufficient to make the sighting, even if by the aid of telescopes, in any part of the world with which we share even a part of the night.

Remark:Some calendars established that the sighting is not possible in the six continents on that day, and what is actually meant by that is sighting by the naked eye, and not sighting in general, and it has been mentioned that sighting by the aid of telescopes is possible in the aforementioned regions.

We invoke Allah to enable us to perform good deeds and accept them and to make it a month of good and blessings and lift any harm off our nation; He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.

[1] It is impossible to sight the crescent in the red-zone regions, due to the fact that the crescent sets before the sun does or/and due to the occurrence of topocentric (surface) conjunction after sunset.

- The sighting of the crescent is possible by the aid of telescopes only in the regions situated in the blue zone.

- The sighting is possible by the aid of telescopes in the regions situated in the pink zone, and it is possible to sight it by the naked eye in case the sky was clear and it was detected by a professional detector.

- The sighting is possible by the naked eye in the regions situated in the green zone.

- The sighting is not possible, neither by the naked eye, nor by the aid of telescopes in the regions situated in the uncolored zone, although the crescent sets after sunset and topocentric conjunction happens before sunset, due to the lack in the crescent’s lighting and/or due to its closeness to the horizon.
