The Juristic Office at the Institution of the late Religious Authority, His Eminence, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra) issued a statement in which it declared that Tuesday 11-9-2018 is the first of Muharram 1440H according to the jurisprudential opinion of the late Religious Authority, His Eminence, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra).
Following is the text of the statement:
The new crescent (central conjunction) for the month of Muharram 1440H. will be born on Sunday, September 9, 2018 A.D. at 18:01 GMT: that is at 21:01 p.m. Beirut time.
The crescent cannot be sighted, Sunday evening, by the naked eye nor by the aid of telescopes in Beirut, or in any region in the world, whether by the naked eye or with the aid of telescopes. Thus, the following day (Monday, 9-10-2018) is the day that completes the month of Zul- Hijja (the thirtieth).
Therefore, the first day of Muharram would be Tuesday 11-09-2018 in all the eastern and western regions, in accordance with the jurisprudential opinion of the late Religious Authority, His Eminence, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra) who considers that the beginning of the month is established if the crescent can be sighted in any region with which we share a part of the night, whether by the naked eye or by the aid of telescopes.
On Monday night the crescent could be easily seen by the naked eye in the Americas and in most of Africa . It might also be seen by the naked eye in some parts of North America, Europe and the Middle East, if the weather is clear and by telescopes in many other regions. This means that Tuesday will be the first day of the new Hijri year 1440 and the first day of Muharram according to other jurisprudence opinions. Consequently the month of Zul-Hijja will be 29 days in accordance with these opinions and thirty days according to the juristic opinion of Sayyed Fadlallah(ra)
We invoke Allah to make it a blessed year on the Muslim nation, and to increase the reward of the believers and ward off any harm that might inflict them. He is the Most Merciful.
