In Memory of Imam Hussein
His defying voice will always represent the will of challenge against all wrong doers

the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful The Religious Authority H.E. Sayyed M. H. Fadlullah delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, 29th February 2008, 22 Safar 1429 H, several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.

The First Sermon 

Al Hussein: The inheritor of the Prophets

The Messenger (p.)  says about Imam Al-Hassan and Al-Hussein: "Who loves them would love me, and who loves me would love Allah. He who hates them would hate me and he who hates me would hate Allah. He also said Al–Hussein is a part of me and I am a part of him.

No matter how many years have passed or will pass, we will still look up to Imam Al-Hussein as the Imam whom we should obey, for he carried the Message and shouldered the responsibility of abiding by it and conveying it to the people. This is because the Imam lived his first childhood with the Messenger while he lived his second childhood with his mother the purified infallible lady, whom the Messenger described as the "mother of her father" and who lived with her father with all her soul and lived with Ali (a.s.) with all love and dedication.

Then in his youth, he accompanied with his brother Imam Al-Hassan, Imam Ali (a.s.) in all what he did in the service of the true line of Islam, learning when to act and when to be patient, the patience of the free in order to preserve Islam and Muslims.

They learned his wisdom, knowledge and thought and became more prepared to take their responsibility as Imams.

Imam Hussein is not merely someone who revolted against injustice. He is an Imam who rose to the level of the Messenger. Thus, when we talk about the Imam we talk about the Message, living it, holding the responsibility of sacrificing for the cause of the Message, and enduring all hardships that we encounter in due course…. Imam Hussein was completely identified with the cause as well as the embodiment of the cause. He was the Imam who inherited all the Messages of the Prophets.

And that is what we read in our visit to him:

 

Peace be upon you,

O son of Ali, the one accepted by Allah,

Peace be upon you,

O son of Fatimah, leader of women in the world,

Peace be upon you,

O son of Khadijah, the great,

Peace be upon you,

 

O you, the one who will be avenged by Allah, and O son of the one who will be avenged by Allah.

O unique martyr, who was killed mercilessly.

I bear witness that you established the worship of Allah,

And the poor due,

And enjoined man to do good,

And forbade them for doing wrong,

And obeyed Allah and His messenger,

Until death came to you“Peace be upon you,

O inheritor of Adam, the chosen one of Allah

Peace be upon you,

O inheritor of Nooh, the prophet of Allah

Peace be upon you,

O inheritor of Ibrahim, the beloved friend of Allah

Peace be upon you,

O inheritor of Musa, who received direct communication from Allah

Peace be upon you,

O inheritor of Muhammad, the beloved friend of Allah

There is no fixed date for us to live with the Imam. He should be remembered every hour and every day… we should love him until we dissolve in him, even when we cry when we remember his tragedy, those are not the tears of sadness only they are also the tears of love and loyalty…. the tears of the cause.

Dedication

Imam Hussein rose to emphasize that he was loyal to his grandfather's message and that he was going to shoulder its responsibility for the sake of the nation. He has learned from his father, the Commander of the Faithful, to shoulder the responsibility of the nation, and to be patient and enduring, as his father was when he was denied his right that Allah ordained and the Messenger conveyed when he said "Whoever I am his leader (Mawla), Ali is his leader (Mawla). O' God, love those who love him, and be hostile to those who are hostile to him and turn the right with him wherever he turns.”

He also learned from his father how to support Islam when others fail it. And this  is what Imam Ali meant when he said that he will  keep the peace as long as the affairs of Muslims were maintained and the only wrong inflicted was against him personally. He learned also how to support Islam rising above his personal hardships and the denial of his right. Imam Ali says:  “I was afraid that if I do not support Islam even if I were denied my rights, there will be a catastrophe that is far greater than assuming the post of ruling, which is something very trivial that will last for a few days and then disappear like clouds, I had to act until the falsehood was defeated…”

 

And this what Imam Hussein sought to do: to uphold the Message and support Islam. He said “ O people: The Messenger of Allah has said: “Whoever sees an oppressive ruler who permits what Allah has forbidden, reneging on his oath, violating the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, treating the servants of Allah oppressively, and does not try to stop him by deed or by word, it will be incumbent upon Allah to treat him as He treats the first. These people have rubbed shoulders with Satan and abandoned their obedience to the Most Merciful One. They have manifested corruption, transgressed the limits, felt comfortable with their ease, permitting what Allah has forbidden, and forbidding what Allah has permitted.

"I am the best to effect a change"

He wanted the nation to shoulder the responsibility of changing the corrupt reality that deviates from the straight; He led the nation in confronting the unjust ruler and calling for reform and change. His voice is still echoing with the passage of time it is calling the Muslim nation to convey his message from one generation to the next, to ensure that Muslims are a struggling nation that seeks to uphold truth and justice.

Reform

That is why, he said I did not revolt seeking power, or corruption but: to demand reform in the community of my grandfather. I want to enjoin the good and forbid the evil and to follow the path established by my grandfather and my father Ali Ibin Abi Talib. Those who accept me accept the truth and Allah is most deserving of the truth. As for those who reject me, I will wait until Allah judges with truth between me and the community, for He is the best of Judges.” Imam Hussein (a.s.) wanted to arouse the people’s awareness and re-establish the rule of Islam, and he was prepared to die to achieve this but I have some reservations on those who claim that he said that he knew from the beginning that he was destined to die. No, the Imam was not seeking death, he sought reform and that is why he declared that he was ready to wait until the day of judgment for Allah to judge between him and those who rejected him.

The role of dialogue

Since Imam Hussein was the representative of a message, he was an Imam of dialogue. He wanted to conduct a dialogue with those who came to fight him; those whose hearts were with him but whose swords were against him. He wanted to guide them to the truth, but they told him that he should accept Yazid's illegitimate and oppressive rule. Thus, when he saw that the matter came to the point of accepting the legitimacy of an illegitimate ruler, he stood up and said: No! By Allah, I will not give you my hand in bay'at like a humiliated person nor will I run away like a slave. And far be it that we accept abjectness. Allah abominates that for us, plus His Proph­et, believers, the chaste pure gentlewomen, those who do not accept oppression as well as the souls who do not submit to meanness abominate it. They disapprove that we prefer obedience of scrooges to the best sites of murder

Thus, Imam Hussein refused to live, except in a dignified way to ensure to everybody and to all generations would enjoy freedom and justice. He has rejected illegitimacy, injustice oppression and any deviation from His Grandfather’s Sunnah. He wanted to teach all generations that they should not accept wronging and deviation, and that they should turn every stage into a new Karbala' for the sake of the Message and for the cause of freedom.

Thus, dear beloved, when we commemorate Ashoura, we should know how to relive the Imam's memory: Imam Hussein revolted because he rejected deviation from his grandfather's message and he sought reform in his grandfather's religion. And we now, in the entire Muslim world, are living corruption, oppression and illegitimacy. We are living the rulers who were appointed by the arrogant powers to safeguard the interests of the latter. We are living the same stage Imam Hussein lived and we have to revolt and seek reform as he did. We should not celebrate his memory by hitting our heads with swords what good will that do for our Imam or for our Muslim nation?

Imam Hussein wants us to strike Zionism and arrogance by our swords, not our heads. He does not want us to lash our backs but the backs of the arrogant. But, we see that they are making new habits and traditions like locking our mouths or walking on our hands or legs. Is this how we accompany Imam Hussein?

The Imam revolted to topple Yazid. Let us seek to topple Bush and all those who choose to be with him.

We have to raise to the level of Imam Hussein, the sacrifice of Imam Hussein, to prevent those who are killing the children in Gaza, and reject such actions just as we reject those who killed the infant Abdullah.

We want our nation to follow the path of the right. This is the way we become loyal to the Imam and raise to his level or we would be as he described us "The slaves of this world".

May Allah bless Imam Hussein; his son Ali bin Al Hussein and his companions. Praise be to Allah the lord of the worlds.

The Second Sermon

Palestine: Intimidation and Judaizing

When we look at the Muslim world what do we see? We see a world divided by the international political axis, and threatened by the various political and security challenges.

In Palestine, the Israeli massacres continue as well as the judaizing process, including the recent massacres in Gaza that killed scores of civilians including children…. Meanwhile, the Enemy's Prime Minister challenges the world and tells the EU states who asked to lift the blockade on Gaza and stop the killings that we will not apologize for anybody for bombing Gaza… The spokesman for the American Department of state does not find anything to say except that Israel has the right to defend itself…. Meanwhile, the calls for dialogue and reconciliation among the Palestinian factions are still blocked by the Americans and the Israelis and – even the Arabs and some Palestinians, as one is afraid to say.

The American Administration expands the circle of violence

In Iraq, the massacres against civilians, especially against the visitors of Imam Hussein, the Takfiris are committing, trying to reproduce the sectarian strife that represents one of the wishes of the occupation as well as one of the weapons that it is trying to use to justify its presence in Iraq.

In Afghanistan, where the American Administration has killed many civilians, things are becoming none difficult that the Americans had to beg NATO forces to stay in the country.

The political and military instability in Afghanistan is affecting Pakistan too which has also become unstable, Somalia too is a victim of this instability, as well as Sudan that has become one of the tools of the game of nations, especially in Darfur which has become the focal point of instability in that country.

Arab Impotence

When we look at the Arab Muslim world where the unemployment rule has soared along with poverty and illiteracy, despite all its potentials and wealth, we ask: Where are those rulers taking the nation? And to which political axis? And why should we remain this lazy incompetent nation that is overburdened with all kinds of violence, myths and ignorance? Is this the nation that Prophet Muhammad (p.) wanted it to lead all nations and that Allah, the Most Exalted, described as the best nation?

Faced by all this, we have to  assume, as peoples and as conscience elites, the leadership of the movement of change in the nation in order the enable it to play once again its role in protecting itself, its causes and all humanity.

On another level, when we look at the bilateral Arab meetings, we notice that they are void of any effect on the level of solving the Arab causes and issues such as the Palestinian, Iraqi and Lebanese ones. On the contrary, these meetings make one feel cautious, on the one hand and it represents the Arab incompetence and staying inside the impasse on the other.

In this respect, there is a certain aspect that should be monitored: Some of those who are taking part in these bilateral meetings represent a certain party in the Lebanese crisis. They are also trying to hold another party responsible for the continuity of the crisis without studying what this party has to say about the Lebanese situation, and thus making the matter one of accusations. This suggests that there are international parties that want to complicate things in Lebanon, especially the issue of the Resistance, although it has become known that the Arab discourse towards Israel is one that aims at consumption which is void of any seriousness in realizing  the dangerousness of the Israeli aggression against the Palestinians. They, the Arabs, have ceased to exert any effort to reunify the Palestinians in the face of the Israeli attempts to divide them and create a new situation that is based on Gaza being something while the West Bank is another.

The Death of the Arab Initiative in Lebanon

Celebrating the Arab initiative as the solution, has aimed at deceiving the Lebanese, since it was born dead, and it did not define in a clear cut way how to solve the Lebanese problems in the aftermath of the July war, especially the national unity government whom some believe it does not reflect real partnership since Lebanon is based on conceptual democracy and not on the rule of majority… the same thing applies to  the electoral law and other issues…

This indicates that the Arab initiative came from the top and did not descend to the roots of the problem, which made her fail and unable to make any breakthroughs.

We believe that the problem of the Lebanese crisis leis in the fact that there are no Lebanese leaders who shoulder their responsibilities in finding a solution.  But, there international powers, that try to direct the axis in a way that promotes their own interests. Thus, if the Lebanese are waiting for an Arab or international solution they will have to wait indefinitely, since the international powers, especially the Americans, seek to keep Lebanon in the current state of tension with the local leaders inciting political and sectarian strife to promote their own interests and not that of the country.
