Good Words Draw People Closer while Bad Ones Cause Enmity

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

His Eminence, the Religious Authority Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah, delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, Rabi' Jumada El-Awwal, 27th 1430 H. - May, 22nd 2009. Several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.

The First Sermon

The word: A key to the relations with others

Allah says in His Glorious Book: "And say to My servants (that) they speak that which is best; surely the Shaitan sows dissensions among them; surely the Shaitan is an open enemy to man." (17:53). "And they are guided to goodly words and they are guided into the path of the Praised One." (22:24). "And speak kindly to mankind." (2:83).

In these Holy verses, as in the Islamic moral line that determines man's relations with the other, whether a close relative, a friend, or a complete stranger, we are advised to use the words that open the minds and hearts of the other and the words that attract him to our beliefs. When one talks, he might use good and kind words that open the hearts and feelings of those whom they are addressed to, drawing them closer to the one who says these words. On a higher level, good words unify society that lives a state of conflict and so on. But there are also the bad words that draw people apart; they close the mind and prevent it form opening to the positive sides in the other's thinking and close the heart and prevent it from feeling the good in the hearts of others. In short, it prevents the establishment of relations between people.

Prophets and good words

Thus, the word is the bridge through which man reaches the other. In this respect, Allah has told us that the Prophets He has sent used good words to draw the people they were sent for closer to Allah, and to ask them to think about what they were telling them, and open up their hearts to love. The slogan of every prophet, whether before Allah punished the people he was sent to, as a result of their disbelief, or after they were punished, was: "And I gave you good advice, but you do not love those who give good advice." (07:79) The Prophet (p.) used to open up on people calling on them to open their minds to think, open their hearts to love and open their lives to do good.

Allah has told us that His Prophet (p.) was of a kind heart whose tongue said only good and kind words that were never harsh or cruel. He was the Prophet of mercy in both his heart and tongue. It was also said that the good word is an act of charity. Just as you give some money to help someone address his needs, good words give him a feeling and an emotion that will solve his psychological problem.

The responsibility of words

Allah has told us about some of the people who abuse their responsibility regarding the words they say, whether in their homes or the community… those words that violate the humanitarian limits of goodness and righteousness, and those who use such words might get used to such a behavior, when they talk with their children, wives, brothers employers and the people around them.

The Messenger of Allah (p.) was reported to have said: “Stay away from obscenity – the obscene shameful speech, whether cursing or words that man feel embarrassed to hear. In public, it is known that the one who uses such words has a "filthy" mouth, since he does not feel embarrassed to say obscene and dirty words even in his family life when he speaks with his wife, children, and people around him – for Allah hates the one who uses obscene language and abuses.”

Heaven if forbidden to cursers

Another Prophetic tradition, whose context is far more serious than the first tradition, and hopefully will be well understood by every person who has a "filthy" tongue, and who might even be one of those that carry out their religious obligations, such as praying, fasting, and performing the pilgrimage, yet the people feel ashamed of listening to their obscene words: “Every person who uses obscene words is forbidden from entering Heaven”, because the angels fear that Heaven will be devastated by his obscenity and filthiness. He (p.) also said: “Obscenity disgraces whoever uses it – it damages his image – while embarrassment ornaments whoever uses it.”  He (p.) also said: “Allah has made Paradise prohibited to anyone who curses or abuses – he has a filthy obscene mouth – who is impolite – he does not feel embarrassed or ashamed even at home in front of his children – and does not care about what he says or what people say to him – he does not mind cursing the people or being cursed back by them, for he neither respects the people nor do they respect him.

In another tradition, the Prophet (p.) asked: “Shall I tell you who is far from being like me?” They said: Yes, Messenger of Allah. He (p.) said: “The person who curses or abuses.” The Prophet (p.) also said, “If obscenity was a creature – characterized by a human being – it would have been the most evil of Allah’s creatures. And,“If obscenity was a model, it would have been a bad model,” both meaning that just like his words are ugly, he is ugly as well. The Prophet (p.) also says: “Of the most evil of Allah’s servants are those whom you hate to sit with because of their obscenity” – there are some people whom you hate to sit with because of their obscene and filthy words; those are the ones who are of the most evil of Allah’s servants.

A tradition of Imam Ali (a.s.) says: “Obscenity and abuse do not belong to Islam.” Imam Al-Baqir (a.s.) was reported to have said: “Tell people the best of things you would like them to say to you– you have to talk to people the same way you like them to talk to you, as the following tradition states: “Treat people the same way you want them to treat you with – Allah hates the curser – The Prophet (p.) has forbidden this act (cursing) and said: “I was not sent a curser – who backbites the believers; and He hates the abuser and insistent beggar.

In a tradition of Imam As-Sadiq (a.s.), he says: “If a man complains from his fellow believer, then his faith will fizzle out of his heart, and if he tells him, “you are my enemy” – unfortunately, these expressions are used a lot in our societies that are living all kinds of fanaticism – then one of them has disbelieved, for Allah says: “The Believers are but a single Brotherhood” (49:10), at the time you say, "this is my enemy", therefore, you would be disobeying Allah's command – Allah does not accept any (good) deed from a believer, if he intends to inflict harm to his brother.”

Imam As-Sadiq (a.s.) also said: “He who people fear his tongue – people fear to get in contact with him because of his filthy tongue – his abode will be in Hellfire.” Hellfire is not only for he who does not pray or fast, but rather it is also the fate of those who commit several social and moral wrongful acts that Allah will hold them accountable for, for Allah loves those who abide by the spiritual, moral, and human values.

This is what Islam, the Messenger of Allah (p.), and the Imams of Ahl Al-Beit (a.s.) talk about. Therefore, he who feels that he possesses some of these vices ought to struggle against his soul and teach it to relief the people around him, so that he gets closer to Allah, and Allah, in return, would be pleased with him.

The Second Sermon

Israel is rushing to take advantage of the Arab vulnerability through the economic conferences and political meetings. Moreover, the Arabs helped, through their regimes, to open the economic and political doors before the enemy and its extremist rightist government, under the title of the "World Economic Forum on the Middle East" sometimes, and the so-called peace process at other times, resulting in the acceleration of the normalization process between the enemy and the "moderate" Arabs.

Anniversary of the 1948 catastrophe

On the 61st anniversary of the Palestinian catastrophe, we notice an international scheme, in which certain Arab and regional parties play their roles, that would lead to a full-scale catastrophe marked especially by the loss of Palestine and the Palestinian cause as well, by driving 57 Islamic countries to recognize Israel, in return of its approval on a sort of a Palestinian state.

The Israeli moderation!

The Arabs, whom the Americans call "moderate Arabs", have developed a strategy of further approaching the enemy at the time it humiliates them even more. They also took into consideration the changes imposed by the Jewish occupiers through electing a more extreme government… so they concluded that the best means to "corner" Israel is through further bowing their heads and presenting additional concessions to it to "embarrass" it more?!

Perhaps the latest of these submissiveness projects before the enemy is what the "Financial Times" has mentioned. It has reported that there exists a plan discussed by several Arab countries, through which they promote their connections with the enemy's entity, which includes allowing the Zionist airways to cross over their airspace, and establishing new connections with it, if the enemy simply promises the United States of America to freeze the colonization operations and not cease them…

Maybe this atmosphere is what drove one of the Arab princes, who was Head of his country's intelligence agency and an ambassador to several countries, to feel pessimistic towards the possibility that the current generation "would overcome the hatred between the Arabs and the Palestinians, on one hand and the Israelis on the other hand", inspite of the fact that neither the Palestinian blood spilled in Gaza has dried yet, nor have the investigations on the major massacres ended… However, some Arabs have their own style of hating their enemy by means of submitting to it every time it goes to the extreme in killing them… even at the time that the enemy's chief Rabbi has candidly expressed that the Arabs are snakes and insects that should be killed.

This generation of Arab politicians who seek to please the enemy in any means possible has jumped over several stages, and threw every chance that might have forced the enemy to subdue at several turning points… As a matter of fact, this generation is using a language – the least we can describe it with is – that it is similar to that of the enemy itself, since it has stated to the enemy's press that Iran is the dangerous threat on the entire region. Even when the Arab League Secretary General dared to declare that the Israeli nuclear arsenal is what represents a threat to the region and not the peaceful Iranian nuclear project, the enemy's president rushed to remind him of the attack of this Arab country's president on Iran and declared that it is the one that constitutes the real threat…

The catastrophe of the Arab politicians

This generation of slack Arab politicians who represent the real catastrophe for the nation is the generation of the Arab defeat that neither belongs to this nation's peoples and expectations, nor to its heritage and authenticity. Therefore, this nation ought to initiate change and reform via its vibrant vanguards and ambitious young potentials, before these Arabs hand over the rest of the territories to the nation's historical enemy; the most criminal and spiteful occupiers in modern times.

Begging is no means of salvation

When we consider the developments taking place in Pakistan and Afghanistan that are represented by murders, destruction, and displacement of millions of people, we do not see any tears shed except those of the fear of the Americans from the possibility that the Pakistani nuclear arsenal might be taken over by the Islamic extremists. Moreover, when we consider the events taking place in Iraq represented by targeting the civilians with spiteful explosives, and the rivers of blood spilled in Somalia, and the aggressions against Sudan carried out by Israel at a time, and some neighboring countries at other times… when we consider these events, we notice that the size of the attack on the nation exceeds what some might think. In addition, we realize that salvation can not be begged from the international powers, whose ultimate concern is fragmenting the Arab and Islamic countries, under the title of fighting terrorism at a time, and at other times under titles of sectarianism and nationalism that is meant to be used against whoever contemplates of standing by the Palestinian people against its executioners…

The necessity of unity

We believe that the phase, which is growing more dangerous at all levels, requires an extraordinary movement by the nation's religious scholars and authorities, to unify the ranks, and establish a fortified unifying Islamic front that sets things right in the internal arena and drives the good and innovative potentials to solidify their steps and movement against the nation's enemy and the international arrogance forces that are still awaiting for opportunities to attack new positions of the nation, despite their major political and economic impasses.

Preparing to confront the enemy

On the internal level, Lebanon that is, nowadays, at a political crossroad, remembers the agreement of the seventeenth of May; the humiliation agreement that was brought down by the believing crowds who started by a sit in at Imam Al-Rida (a.s.) Mosque in Bir El-'Abd, and continued through the valorous resistance movement that culminated on the 25th of May with a victory for the entire nation and all the free people of the world…

Lebanon, at the official, political, and popular levels is supposed, in these days, to declare its true affiliation to the period of victories and creative innovations that vanquished the enemy and defeated it once more during July war in 2006. It should also refute any affiliation to the evil humiliation agreement of the seventeenth of May that was the date meant as a starting point of the arrogant occupying march that would have rendered the entire region a prey to America and Israel.

Liberation Day

Commemorating the Liberation Day with its major and decisive results, we realize that it was not only a victory for the Lebanese and the southerners in Lebanon, but rather it was the dawn that spread the light of dignity and pride to the various Arab and Islamic arenas. Moreover, the darkness of certain Arab and Muslim regimes was meant to besiege the light of this victory and its repercussions on the enemy… This is what makes us understand the hugeness of the counter attack that drove the Arab regimes to side further with the enemy, for the scheme meant that they crawl to the positions of humiliation fearing that the masses of freedom, dignity, and pride might sweep them.

Embracing the Resistance

Amidst the chaos of the politics and electoral rhetoric in the internal arena, we call all the Lebanese to embrace their honorable resistance more than ever; this resistance that represented – and still does – the most prominent symbol of dignity in the nation, especially now that everyone has become aware of the size of the Israeli penetration through its spying networks and continuous threats represented by its officials' statements and army's maneuvers in the field.

We want the Lebanese to strengthen their internal unity and not to get involved in disputes, over useless details, which are of no interest to them or their country. Moreover, their ultimate concern should be how everyone can cooperate to preserve the country from the devious enemy, and limit their movement to what benefits them and establishes a strong, just, and free country.
