Al-Ghadeer: The Day of Commitment to Islam

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

His Eminence, the Religious Authority Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah, delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, Thil-Hijja, 17th 1430 H. - December, 4th 2009. Several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.

The First Sermon

Ali (a.s.)'s high status

On the eighteenth of Thil-Hijja is the anniversary of Al-Ghadeer; the anniversary of that moment in history in which the Prophet (p.) stood, returning from his farewell pilgrimage, in Ghadeer Khum to announce his successor. Amongst what he said was: "O people! Allah is my Master, and I am the mawla (master) of the believers. I have more authority over your lives then you yourselves have; therefore, to whomsoever I have been a mawla, this – pointing to Ali – is his mawla. O Lord! Befriend whoever befriends him, and be an enemy of whoever sets himself as his enemy."

If we want to understand the background of the Hadith of Khum, the best we can do is to refer to Ali (a.s.)'s life and to the many stands of the Messenger of Allah (p.) where he gave precedence to Ali over others when it came to the elements of the true value. Muslims narrate that the Prophet (p.) said: "I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate." It was also narrated that he said to Ali: "You are to me as Haroon was to Musa, except that there will be no Prophet after me." In another tradition, he (p.) said: "Ali is with the Right and the Right is with Ali; and wherever Ali went, the right followed."

Raised by the Prophet

Ali was raised by the Messenger of Allah (p.) when he was still an infant with no teeth, so he grew up in his lap and the Messenger (p.) held him tight and made him sleep in his bed, touching his body and smelling his hair, and each day, he used to teach him one of his high traits in the form of a banner. Moreover, Ali (a.s.) used to follow the Prophet (p.) like a young camel following the footsteps of its mother. Therefore, Ali enjoyed the mind of the Messenger of Allah, and embraced his spirit and shared with him the same expectations and lines; so, Ali was not influenced, in any way, by any of the pre-Islamic era characteristics, and he never prostrated to an idol, or ever ascribed any partners to Allah.

The Imamate: A continuity of prophethood

Enjoying all these traits, Ali (a.s.) was the most one qualified to succeed the Prophet (p.), for the role of the caliph is not merely to rule, but also to enroot faith in people's lives, and to go forth in building the Islamic community on a solid basis, since the phase of prophecy – in all its challenges wars and situations – did not finish the course of building the individual and the society, but rather set the foundation for it.

Commitment to Ali is commitment to Islam

We do not follow Ali out of his kinship to the Messenger (p.) or because of his chivalry, but rather because he was an Imam to Muslims even when he was not a caliph; his words were conclusive when people differed amongst each other and his deeds were the light that guided people whenever they deviated. He is the role model – after the Prophet (p.) – in the movement of knowledge, management, and devotion to Islam and Muslims that he opened up to. He (a.s.) said: "The Messenger of Allah taught me about one thousand [fields] of knowledge, each one of which opens on a thousand more." It is he who abandoned his right for the caliphate when he noticed that people were retreating from Islam and calling for eliminating the religion of Muhammad (p.). Imam Ali (a.s.) said: "I was afraid that if I do not support Islam even if I were denied my rights, there will be a catastrophe that is far greater than assuming the post of ruling, which is something very trivial that will last for a few days and then disappear like clouds, I had to act until falsehood was defeated," and: "I will keep the peace as long as the affairs of Muslims are secure and the only injustice befalls on me."

Ali: An advocate to Islamic unity

Actually, we learn from Ali the traits of Islamic unity, and how to open up to whomever we differ with, and to confirm what brings us together so as to preserve Islam against all the challenges storming the nation without discriminating between a sect and another, or amongst Muslims themselves.

Imam Ali (a.s.) is the symbol of our Islamic unity, for all Muslims have the same view on him, respect him, and give him precedence over all the others. Even if Muslims have had disagreements on Ali back in history on the issue of the caliphate and the imamate, nowadays we can unite through him, based on the course he has consecrated in the reality.

The Second Sermon

The Zionist settlement activities continue

In occupied Palestine, the enemy continues to change the features of Jerusalem and the West Bank by further usurping the houses of the Palestinians and driving them out and by confiscating the identities of the Jerusalemites; at a time the enemy's Prime Minister has talked about a delusive step to freeze the colonization activities for the coming ten months.

Confiscating the right of protest

At a time the UN Secretary General can not even demand to put an end to the colonization activities and to execute the international resolutions, but calls only on the occupation to freeze these acts, the enemy mounts a political attack on the European Union – at the level of its foreign ministers – merely for discussing a draft resolution that points out to Eastern Jerusalem as a capital for the Palestinian State, for the enemy does not want anyone to mention the right of the Palestinians when it comes to Jerusalem, even at the nominal or media levels.

False international promises

At a time we could feel the slackening of the nation in facing the dangers threatening Jerusalem that constitutes the capital, the symbol, and the cause, and call on it [nation] to shoulder its big responsibilities towards it…we stress that the Palestinians ought not to fall in the trap of reassuring themselves for the results of the past experiences with the International Community are still before their eyes, and the present holds what is even worse.

Obama on the steps of Bush

On another level, the American President has revealed the last feature of his true political personality, as he announced his plan to send thirty thousand soldiers to Afghanistan; all coming down to one fact that the one who had called for change in his electoral campaigns is the one that changed. Therefore, he would go down the road undertaken by the former US President, further spilling the blood of Muslims in Afghanistan, and continuing the occupation under false pretenses of war on terrorism and overseas threats, forgetting all about his country's on the ground terrorism and his indirect support to the terrorism of the Zionist entity at all times.

International attack on Iran

As for Iran, it is subjected, nowadays, to a coordinated international attack through which the international axes play concerted roles, in terms of a political and media siege that paves the way for an economic siege and multiple sanctions, under the pretext that they are concerned about its peaceful nuclear project, noting an illogical Russian engagement in the Israeli, American, and western campaign. Actually, this calls for an appropriate Islamic and Arab stand that would break these pressures that not only target the state of Iran in itself, but also aims at trapping anyone who even thinks about supporting the Palestinian people and the nations' issues, and anyone who seeks enhancing the nation's elements of strength, at the scientific and field levels.

Leaving the resistance out of internal debates

On the Lebanese level, we call for excluding the resistance from the kind of debate some are insisting on engaging in, especially at a time the enemy is making additional threats on Lebanon and discussing the possibility of waging a lightning war on Lebanon in the coming year. Moreover, we call for fortifying the country at the internal level by establishing political unity whose primary protectors are the resistance and the Lebanese army.
